Campaign launched against Jacqui Smith MP for Redditch

Richard Timney | 22.03.2010 20:20 | Birmingham

The MP for Redditch, Jacqui Smith was at the centre of the expenses scandal. In the run up to the general election, a new campaign is reminding her constituents of her thieving ways and also seeks to put the whole UK wide expenses scandal back on the agenda. It encourages the electorate to seriously consider boycotting the 3 big parties so as to send a clear message to them and parliament.

Jacqui Smith claimed £150,304 in spending on the family residence in Redditch, which she nominated as her "second home". The expenses were paid on top of her salary, which in 2008 stood at £141,866.

One of the items she claimed for was an 88p bath plug!! She also claimed for a range of high-tech electrical equipment and 2 porn movies which were watched by her husband Richard Timney!! (see full list below)

If this were not bad enough, a house in London owned by Jacqui Smith's sister was designated as her main residence in order to claim a parliamentary allowance for her house in Redditch as a secondary home! This was despite explicitly stating on her website that she "lives in Redditch". She has claimed more than £116,000 over six years from this arrangement!

Out of an electorate of 63,150 people in Redditch, only 18,012 voted for her in 2005. That's just 28.5% of those eligible to vote! After the expenses scandal, she'll get far less votes this time round. It's looking likely she'll get kicked out of parliament - it won't come a moment too soon!!

Of course it wasn't just Labour MP's who robbed us all, Conservatives and Lib Dems did too. Who can forget the Tory MP Peter Viggers’s £1,645 claim for a duck house!!

PURPOSE OF THE CAMPAIGN

As we approach the general election, the purpose of the campaign is three-fold:

1. Firstly to remind voters in Redditch of the scandal surrounding their MP and urge them to kick her out!

2. Secondly, to highlight the whole UK wide expenses scandal once again, so that the thieving scum bags action's are at the forefront of voters minds when they visit the polling station shortly.

3. Finally, to urge voters everywhere(including those who don't normally vote) to send a very strong message to the big 3 parties by voting for the smaller parties and independent candidates. This is the most important bit. Don't just stay at home, use your vote to send a clear message which parliament and the big 3 parties will never forget!!

JACQUI SMITH'S EXPENSES CLAIM

Here's a reminder of what Jacqui Smith claimed public money for, similar to the claim lists for hundreds of MP's across the UK:

*Two pay-per-view adult movies - £5 each
*Two pay-per-view screenings of the Hollywood blockbuster Ocean's 13 - £3.75 each
*Pay-per-view screening of the animated cartoon Surf's Up - £3.50
*Habitat stone model sink - £550
*Bath plug - 88p
*Dining room table - £460
*Sofabed - £704
*Antique fireplace - £1,000. Also claimed for coal to burn in it.
*Hotpoint cooker - £399
*Connection fee for installing cooker - £15
*Hotpoint tumble dryer - £189
*Ariston washing machine - £249
*Zanussi washing machine - nearly £300
*Entertainment centre including DVD players, two Samsung widescreen televisions and two digital set-top boxes - more than £1,100

Unbelievable.

This is beyond parody:

Get it off indymedia!

Why unbelievable?

23.03.2010 01:00

Sarah, why do you think this should be taken off Indymedia? Are you in favour of scandals such this continuing? Should we all just bury our heads in the sand and hope for the best? How on earth can we hope to change the political system by simply ignoring what's going on?

This article doesn't support any particular party. It's merely seeking to encourage the electorate to kick out the scum and vote in people who are honest and trustworthy. Surely it's worth while taking a little time to cast a vote against this ongoing scandal?

Leave it on.

No.

It isn't seeking to to encourage the electorate to kick out the big three, its an attempt to undermine the numbers who are switching to the Lib Dems from the Lab camp. This has been going on for a few weeks here at IM and always follows the same formula, don't vote for anyone because they are ALL bad. In other words, don't switch to the Lib Dems from Labour. The person or persons posting these comments are almost certainly Labour party activists.

So it should be taken down because it is political manipulation, which IM does not support or endorse. IM is autonomous not partisan.

Sarah is right, it should be removed.

My votes going to...

I hadn't used to vote but now I'm inclined to think that not voting is part of the reason why we're in this mess. I don't trust any of the big parties. The Greens seem to be the best bet. I would like to see this guy beat Jacqui Smith!  http://kevinwhitegreenparty.wordpress.com/
