50 Activists March on Bradford Uni Open Day

Stop Animal Experiments at Bradford (SAEAB) | 03.07.2010 19:08 | Animal Liberation

CLOSE THE BRADFORD ANIMAL LAB!

Fifty campaigners today marched through Bradford City Centre to oppose the animal experiments happening at the university.

First of all, speeches were held in Centenary Square before heading off along the streets and up to the main campus. The march was determined and focused, receiving lots of attention from members of the public and thousands of leaflets handed out.

Up at the main campus, chants and speeches were held outside the Richmond Building before heading up to the main road.

The protest was intended to let potential students know about the vivisection happening on campus as it was the University's Open Day, however the event was cut short down to only a few hours in a desperate attempt to stop information being spread about the horrors occuring inside the university labs.

The demonstrations was definately successful with lots of support bering received from members of the public.

local inclusion

04.07.2010 10:57

hi. first of all, well done for keeping up the pressure on the uni. with budget cutbacks looming, it hopefully won't be long before the increased security costs they now have to pay to allow the torture to continue will mean they have to stop. i truly hope this happens as soon as possible.

there's a couple of things I wanted to point out however, as many in the quite large bradford activist scene, and many students at the uni who have spoken to us are quite angry that major demos are being called in their city without any attempts to include them in the campaign or even let them know it is happening.

The hub of those engaged in the struggle for animal liberation, and probably the first place where support for a campaign in bradford would effectively be sought is the 1 in 12 club, and to date there have been no posters, announcements, meetings to get involved or just letting people know happening there. what this means is that the attendence of this event could have easily doubled had people known about it, but noone did. Those that did know in advance were largely pissed off at not being included and so decided not to go.

likewise, over the road from the demonstration is the treehouse veggie cafe where many veggie students who would get involved hang out, and where catering for these demos could have been done therefore supporting a place that could continue putting out the message between demos.

The policy of only announcing these events on the uk site and not the northern imc one is also counterproductive since the vast majority of activists in bradford don't read the uk site as the northern one is based in their city and so is more relevant to them.

anyhow, that said noone is doubting your commitment and enthusiasm so keep up the good work. hopefully you will take this on board and make an effort to get local involvement in the campaign soon.

thanks for the invite

i'd like to be able to calmly and politely agree with the comments above. but unfortunately i can't coz there are lots of people in bradford who wudda supported this and you didn't include or invite them. we wanna fight the slaughter of animals in bradford, we need to join up to do it together, but people from bradford aren't included!
there was a really massive protest a few months ago at bradford uni and the students at that uni didn't know anything about it even happening!!

it's just stupid to come to bradford without the support of people who are from bradford. have a meeting here and we'll come. include us! if you don't it just makes us wanna join with everyone one else who thinks your nuts!

just to inform any Bradford activists who feel put out regarding the Bradford uni demo. This event was given good publicity such as leaflets and info at 1in12 during the anarchists book fair. Animal aid magazine. Stop Animal Experiments At Bradford web site. NAVA web site. Sheffield uni demo. World day for animals(London). Leeds animal protection meetings. Also students at the uni were told by uni staff not to talk to any activists. This occured a number of times at previous demo's. Bradford animal rights group were fully informed of this demo and also held a stall on the day.
