The real issue for the NGOs may be that they want the U.S. to move away from oil, period. In a way, the relative ecological filthiness of Alberta synthetic petroleum is beside the point; what makes that oil a special threat is that its abundance will delay America’s transformation to a post-oil economy. And pipelines, which represent practically irreversible multi-decade supply commitments, are an attractive choke point for advocates of the anti-fossil transition and NGO veterans in the Obama administration and Congress. Enbridge’s spill thus thrusts a poorly timed elbow into the breadbasket of its sister pipeline company, TransCanada Corp., which is struggling to win U.S. approval for an extension of its Keystone system.
The Keystone line currently runs from Alberta to the oil crossroads of the continent at Cushing, Okla. The idea behind “Keystone XL” is to open new capacity for Alberta’s production by reaching out from Cushing to the Gulf Coast (where some refineries are designed to handle similar heavy oil from Venezuela, a political basket case whose output is declining). XL’s fate technically lies with the State Department, which issued a favourable draft environmental impact statement (EIS) on Apr. 20..

CALGARY, Alberta -(Dow Jones)- Plans to expand the flow of crude into the U.S. from Canada's oil sands faced mounting political pressure Tuesday as the chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives energy committee, Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), said he's opposed to the expansion of TransCanada's Corp.'s ( TRP, TRP.T) Keystone pipeline and urged U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to reject the company's request for a international building permit.
Calling Keystone "a multi-billion dollar investment to expand our reliance on the dirtiest source of transportation fuel currently available," Waxman said he was concerned that using oil-sands oil would increase U.S. greenhouse gas emissions..
Waxman joins 49 other Democratic representatives who signed a similar letter to Clinton last month asking her to reject the pipeline expansion.
The first phase of the $12 billion Keystone project began operation on July 1, shipping 435,000 barrels of crude oil from Canada's oil sands region into the U.S. Through a $7 billion expansion, TransCanada plans to increase the flow to 1.1 million barrels per day, which would roughly double the amount of oil sands being shipped into the U.S. from last year's amount, and extend the line to the heavy crude refineries on the Gulf Coast by 2013.

Expansion of TransCanada Corp.' s Keystone oilsands pipeline -- already under fire from some U.S. legislators -- is facing another hurdle, this time from a key U.S. government environmental agency.

The Environmental Protection Agency says further study is required since the current review of the project to extend the pipeline to the U.S. Gulf Coast falls short in identifying all potential environmental impacts, including higher carbon emissions by supporting oilsands operations.
The issues are raised in a letter to the U.S. State Department, which has yet to approve the $7-billion expansion to the existing Keystone pipeline that would ship 510,000 barrels per day of bitumen from Alberta to refiners in the Gulf Coast by 2013.
The EPA concerns add to growing opposition to the project by environmental groups and U.S. lawmakers -- most recently U.S. political heavyweight Henry Waxman, chair of the U.S. Congress's powerful energy and commerce committee two weeks ago.
That has sparked a defence by Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach, who responded with his own letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The province also took out an ad in the Washington Post touting Alberta oil as a stable and secure source of energy.
In its submission, the U.S. environmental agency is calling for more analysis and information on the purpose and need for the project, as well as the potential for higher greenhouse gas emissions.
"We estimate that GHG emissions from Canadian oilsands crude would be 82 per cent greater than the average crude refined in the U.S., on a well-to-tank basis," the agency said in its submission.
Total emissions from the fully completed pipeline could reach 27 million tonnes, "roughly equivalent to annual CO2 emissions of several coal-fired power plants," it said...
TransCanada said it is "not appropriate" for the Department of State to review greenhouse gas impacts of the pipeline, as it does not drive oilsands development.



Federal agency(Hillary Clinton) adds 90 days to Keystone XL process

Federal officials have delayed a decision on a permit for a $7 billion oil pipeline from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico.
The State Department said Monday it's adding 90 days to the comment period for other federal agencies on whether TransCanada Corp.'s Keystone XL pipeline is in the national interest.
Keystone XL would move oil from Canada through Montana, along the border of North Dakota and South Dakota to Nebraska. The pipeline would then hook up with another pipeline in Kansas and move oil through Oklahoma and Texas.
The comment period had been scheduled to end Sept. 15. It will now extend until 90 days after the State Department has issued an environmental impact statement on the pipeline.
The department didn't say when the environmental statement would be finished.

Reuters) - For Calgary-based TransCanada, a recent Michigan oil spill from a pipeline operated by its rival Enbridge Inc couldn't have come at a worse time.

By 2013, TransCanada's Keystone system could deliver 1.1 million barrels-per-day (bpd) along a route from Alberta to coastal Texas. But that requires U.S. approval for Keystone XL, a $7 billion, 1,661 mile (2,673 km) Montana-to-Texas addition to Keystone's existing network, which can run 435,000 bpd to Illinois. "The recent spills probably won't derail the (TransCanada) pipeline expansion, but could add lots of bureaucracy before it proceeds," said oil consultant John Brodman, a former Department of Energy official.
"I'd expect even more scrutiny, more investigations and more pipeline inspections going forward."
U.S. lawmakers have already scheduled two sets of congressional hearings on pipeline safety for next month, one of them in response to Enbridge's Michigan spill. Last week, protesters gathered outside a Chicago event attended by President Barack Obama, demanding he nix Keystone XL.
The State Department, which must approve Keystone XL, recently extended the project's federal review period by 90 days, into December. The Environmental Protection Agency is reviewing the plans.
The National Wildlife Federation recently identified more than 2,000 U.S. pipeline incidents over the last decade, including scores of oil and gas spills, explosions, and several deaths.
Keystone XL will traverse Nebraska's Ogallala aquifer, which supplies water to almost 30 percent of farmland in the U.S. Midwest. The Enbridge leak, which briefly threatened to reach Lake Michigan, is a reminder of how serious a spill could be, environmentalists say.
"The spill in Michigan shows us that pipeline accidents happen, even when the industry is regulated,'' said Sierra Club's Kate Colarulli.
But other analysts doubt the Michigan spill will delay Keystone XL at all.
Despite U.S. concerns, Canada's U.S. crude shipments have risen almost 30 percent from a decade ago, and it is piping in 2.5 million bpd this year, or a fourth of U.S. imports.
That makes Canada the undisputed top U.S. Supplier...
Alberta officials have said the United States may consume more than 4 million bpd of its bituminous heavy crude-tar sands within two decades, assuming pipelines like Keystone XL are built.
Meanwhile, other perennial U.S. suppliers have cut their shipments. Saudi cargoes to the United States fell to a 23 year low near 1 million barrels a day in 2009.
U.S.-bound cargoes from Latin America are dwindling. Venezuela shipped 1 million bpd last year, down a third from a decade ago. Mexico supplied 1.2 million bpd, a 13-year low.
Unless U.S. policy-makers move aggressively to wean the country off foreign oil, analysts say greater reliance on Canadian oilsands crude appears inevitable.

Environmental groups and landowners, upset by last month's oil spill in Michigan, are urging the Obama administration to deny a proposal for an oil pipeline that would go from the Montana-Canada border to refineries along the Texas Gulf Coast.
Alberta-based TransCanada's proposed 1,661-mile Keystone XL pipeline would link up with its existing 2,151-mile Keystone pipeline, which began operations in June, and go through Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.
Opponents say last month's spill underscored the dangers of the United States' reliance on fossil fuels. A pipeline ruptured on July 25 and spilled nearly a million gallons of crude oil into a tributary of the Kalamazoo River in southwestern Michigan, according to Environmental Protection Agency estimates.
Environmental groups such as the Sierra Club, Friends of the Earth and the Natural Resources Defense Council opposed the Keystone XL project even before the Michigan spill, but the incident has increased scrutiny and elevated concerns.
Groups opposing the expanded pipeline have popped up onFacebook. Last week, protesters demonstrated outside Chicago's Palmer House Hilton hotel, where President Obama was attending a Democratic fundraiser, and hung a banner over Obama's Lake Shore Drive route that read, "Pres. Obama: Stop the Keystone Pipeline, Stop the Tar Sands."

NEBRASKA SANDHILLS - For those who feel drawn toward the ranching life in the soft days of spring, this area is a magnificent magnet.
Cows trot thankfully out of their winter quarters toward oceans of green grass, spinning windmills and water so abundant that it literally oozes through the soil surface.

They clatter into long livestock trailers as eagerly as morning commuters on their way to the first day of a dream job. Their latest calves, new to this annual ritual, wonder what it's all about.

At the start of the 2010 grazing season, there's something else that's new to even the most veteran ranchers in north-central Nebraska.
As the U.S. Gulf Coast reels from the effects of an oil disaster, TransCanada is positioning itself to bury an oil pipeline through fragile landscape and over the deep end of the largest underground aquifer in the United States.

Those who propose to lay the 36-inch diameter Keystone XL line four feet down from Canada through Nebraska all the way to Gulf refineries say this is a big step toward securing the energy future.

TransCanada says that connection can be had with no significant threat to natural resources.
It foresees nothing more than a temporary intrusion on the latest of ranching generations.
The same goes for tunneling under the Niobrara River, just downstream from its scenic river designation...

"No way."

That was Teri Taylor's first reaction to the news that the pipeline would cross the far-flung pasture setting near Stuart where she was born 57 years ago.

"I know what it's like to reclaim that ground even on a small scale," she said.
Husband Dennis Taylor, 60, and son Tim hunker down with her around a kitchen table 14 miles down gravel roads from Nebraska Highway 20 and 18 miles from the town of Stuart, population 650.

Dennis Taylor speaks anxiously of the constant erosion threat to Sandhills dune areas called "blowouts," the direction of the pipe route and the patterns of prevailing winds.

"The northwest wind will blow that pipe bare in two years," he predicts.
"Kind of the elephant in the room," says Tim Taylor, who came home to be the family's herd veterinarian in 2005, "is the spill in the Gulf."

The Taylors find little comfort in the choices of signing an easement for the three places where the pipe will cross their property or becoming victims of the pipeline builder's right of eminent domain.
"If we don't go along in timely fashion with settling an easement," Tim Taylor says, "we can end up with condemnation and still end up with a pipeline."

Note: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, has pushed the XL Pipeline decision until after the November 8, 2010 Congressional Elections.
This is not insignificant. One of President Obama's closest advisors Press Secretary Robert Gibbs in angering House Leader Nancy Pelosi said the Democratic Party could lose control of Congress in the November elections.
The approval of XL Pipeline under SS Hillary Clinton is imminent.
However, a significant and grassroots activist movement under Obama
is the mainstream Green movement. Approval before the election would mean going to war with himself. Make no mistake Obama is personally involved in the XL Pipeline process.
An attack on Obama's base is already being realized, on many fronts.
Obama's close adviser Robert Gibbs recently did a Helen Thomas in a unguarded moment with Washington's Hill Times-he vilified the left for criticizing Obama. And forced to apologize. Many are calling for his head.

The U.S. secretaries of State and Defense made an unprecedented joint visit to the Korean demilitarized zone, Wednesday morning, in a show of solidarity with South Korea.
The visit by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates came in the wake of the sinking of a South Korean Navy ship by North Korea and just a few days before the first of several large scale military exercises in the area designed to send a message of strength and resolve to the North.

BEIJING — China's military on Thursday condemned a second round of U.S.-South Korean naval drills planned in the Yellow Sea in the coming weeks, vowing it would respond in kind.
Beijing opposes actions by foreign military ships and planes in waters near its coast that could "affect China's security interests," the military's newspaper People's Liberation Army Daily said in an editorial.

"If no one harms me, I harm no one, but if someone harms me, I must harm them," said the editorial, signed by Maj. Gen. Luo Yuan, a frequent outspoken commentator on military matters.

"As far as the Chinese people and the Chinese military are concerned, these are not joking remarks," Luo wrote.

China has repeatedly criticized the drills, saying they risked heightening tensions on the Korean peninsula and ignored its objections to any foreign military exercises off its coast.
The expected participation of the aircraft carrier USS George Washington is particularly irksome to China because of its status as a symbol of U.S. power in the Pacific and the possibility of its F-18 warplanes flying within range of Beijing.

The exercises are the second in a series of U.S.-South Korean maneuvers to be conducted in the East Sea off Korea and the Yellow Sea. No date has been announced, but they are expected to happen in the coming weeks. The first maneuvers were conducted last week.
Although the Yellow Sea consists mostly of international waters, China regards it as lying within its vaguely defined security perimeter. China's Foreign Ministry issued a statement earlier this week demanding the U.S. and South Korea "take China's position and concern seriously."

China responded with outrage when U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told a regional conference last month that the U.S. had a "national interest" in seeing territorial disputes in the South China Sea resolved through a "collaborative diplomatic process by all claimants."

Beijing prefers to leverage its size and strength to deal with each claimant individually and blasted Clinton's remarks as U.S. interference in its affairs.

Asia watchers have been consumed in past weeks with parsing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's blunt declaration that the United States will play a role in South China Sea territorial issues. Applauding Mrs. Clinton's tougher stance on China from the sidelines are America's military elites, especially those forward deployed in the Pacific Ocean.
The big question is whether all this signals a more fundamental shift in the Obama administration's China policy.
Secretary Clinton's words may represent a new realism in U.S. policy, not only toward China, but toward America's responsibilities to uphold stability, promote security and help shape a more democratic future for the Asia-Pacific region. Her words are a good beginning. Breathing life into them will be the difficult next step.

Retired Marine Corps Major General Smedley Butler claimed that wealthy businessmen were plotting to create a fascist veterans' organization and use it in a coup d’état to overthrow United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt, with Butler as leader of that organization.
In 1934 Butler testified to the McCormack-Dickstein Congressional committee on these claims.[1] In the opinion of the committee, these allegations were credible. One of the purported plotters, Gerald MacGuire, vehemently denied any such plot. In their report, the Congressional committee stated that it was able to confirm Butler's statements other than the proposal from MacGuire which it considered more or less confirmed by MacGuire's European reports.[1] No one was prosecuted.
While historians have questioned whether or not a coup was actually close to execution, most agree that some sort of "wild scheme" was contemplated and discussed.[2][3][4][5][6]

Smedley Darlington Butler (1881-1940) blew the whistle on the little- known plot of the title. He was on public television the fall of 1993 in "The Road to Rock Bottom"--Part 2 of The Great Depression series (Blackside production). Near the end it shows Butler in shirtsleeves, urging on 10,000 of the war veterans who had marched to Washington and camped in Anacostia DC. It was July 1932. The Bonus Army asked for early payment of moneys promised for 1945. "Some were the same men who had fought under Smedley Butler in the Spanish-American War, the Philippines campaign, the Boxer Rebellion, ...Caribbean interventions, the Chinese intervention of 1927-8, and World War I" (p 3).
Butler, a major general at 48, retired from the Marine Corps in 1931. He had faced gunfire 120 times. Columnist Will Rogers wrote of Butler, "He is what I would call a natural born warrior. He will fight anybody, any time....He carries every medal we ever gave out. He has two Congressional Medals of Honor....You give him another war and he will get him another one....I do admire him" (p 116).
Except the two years in China, Butler spent the last third of his service in police work and administration. During this time a disillusion with war spread through Europe and America. The mood fed on books like ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT and MERCHANTS OF DEATH.
August 21, 1931, Butler spoke to an American Legion convention in New Britain CT. Looking back, he reflected on his career. His remarks stunned the audience. Few papers dared report even part of the speech:
"I spent 33 years...being a high-class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer for capitalism....
"I helped purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1916. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City [Bank] boys to collect revenue in. I helped in the rape of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street....
"In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went its way unmolested....I had...a swell racket. I was rewarded with honors, medals, promotions....I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate a racket in three cities. The Marines operated on three continents..." (p 118).
Why would a cabal of capitalists--conspirators of enormous wealth-- approach such a man? Because they knew veterans revered him; he never ordered anything done he would not do himself. Grunts, noncoms, and combat officers believed Butler was their friend. Forty times, envoys of Wall Street tried to persuade him to lead a coup d'etat.
The instigators wanted a putsch commander who could mobilize 500,000 soldiers overnight. These would make up a paramilitary force, to take form as the American Liberty League. Its pattern was a French veterans' group, the Croix de Feu. (The backers studied then rejected two other models of veterans' organization that fascists had used in taking power: Mussolini's blackshirts and Hitler's brownshirts.)
The reason for the plot was the election of President Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR), a member of the same ruling circles as the cabal itself. March 5, 1933--the day after his inauguration--FDR embargoed the export of gold and declared a national bank holiday. He told the "Hundred Days Congress" to enact a New Deal into law. In striving against the Depression, FDR awakened hope in the American people, but he appalled bankers and industrialists. Who would pay for this New Deal? The rich feared changes to the US system of finance, a rise in taxes, possibly even (Heaven forbid!) socialism.
Rumours of the plot reached Washington, where the Committee on Un- American Activities (CUAA)--was already exposing fascist intrigues. Its cochairmen were John McCormack (D MA) and Samuel Dickstein (D NY). CUAA got in touch with Smedley Butler: did the general have anything to tell them? After prying out all the plans he could, Butler asked a friend, an experienced newsman, to confirm the whole incredible scheme. The reporter visited twice with an agent of the conspirators (a wounded Marine vet) and set down his findings.
Secret executive hearings of CUAA opened November 20, 1934. Sworn testimony showed that the plotters represented notable families --Rockefeller, Mellon, Pew, Pitcairn, Hutton; and great enterprises-- Morgan, Dupont, Remington, Anaconda, Bethlehem, Goodyear, GMC, Swift, Sun.... Some people named as plotters laughed, all denied everything.

Hearings No. 73-D.C.-6, Part 1.' Extracts of the censored testimony are revealed in the books A MAN IN HIS TIME, by John L. Spivak [NY: Horizon Press, 1967], and ONE THOUSAND AMERICANS, by George Seldes [NY: Boni & Gaer, 1947]" (p 140).
Jules Archer has written 29 books on politics and personalities such as Eisenhower, MacArthur, Kenyatta, and Castro. Here he succeeds in "break[ing] some of the seals of silence that have kept Americans from knowing about [a] conspiracy" of US fascists in 1933-4 (p x). "The conspiracy unquestionably inspired the novel SEVEN DAYS IN MAY..." (p 243). Sixteen pages of Marine Corps and news photos, editorial cartoons, and family portraits add to the impact of Archer's account.

After all, even the right-wing pages of UK's The Telegraph have been used by Ambrose Evans-Pritchard to attack misguided austerity measures.
We live in bizarre times.

Who knew that Paul Krugman, the economist and New York Times columnist would emerge as a voice of doom? Mr. Krugman, who has recently been arguing the necessity of continuing stimulus spending at a time when the global economic recovery is weak, is – to put it mildly – disappointed by the G-20’s commitment of deficit reduction.
Indeed, he believes the world is now at the threshold of an all-out depression with spending cutbacks coming at the worst possible time for the economy.
“Neither the Long Depression of the 19th century nor the Great Depression of the 20th was an era of nonstop decline – on the contrary, both included periods when the economy grew. But these episodes of improvement were never enough to undo the damage from the initial slump, and were followed by relapses,” he said in a Monday column in the New York Times.
“We are now, I fear, in the early stages of a third depression. It will probably look more like the Long Depression than the much more severe Great Depression. But the cost – to the world economy and, above all, to the millions of lives blighted by the absence of jobs – will nonetheless be immense.
And this third depression will be primarily a failure of policy. Around the world – most recently at last weekend’s deeply discouraging G-20 meeting –

When mega-millionaire real estate mogul Donald Trump married model Melania Knauss, the wedding bill was $1,000,000. 

The marriages of Madonna and film director Guy Ritchie, Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren, and Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones pushed up the cost of celebrity marriages to $1.5 million. 

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes upped the ante to $2,000,000.

Now comes the politicians's daughter as celebrity. According to news reports,Chelsea Clinton's wedding to investment banker Mark Mezvinsky on July 31 is costing papa Bill $3,000,000. According to the London Daily Mail,
the total price tag will be about $5,000,000. The additional $2,000,000 apparently is being laid off on US Taxpayers as Secret Service costs for protecting former president Clinton and foreign heads of state, such as the presidents of France and Italy and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who are among the 500 invited guests along with Barbara Streisand, Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, Ted Turner, and Clinton friend and donor Denise Rich, wife of the Clinton-pardoned felon...

American Corporate Media pushed the event as the Wedding of the Decade- while Obama was left to being on the morning television talk show The View, where oddly he was asked if he was invited-he jokingly said one president was enough. The world has not witnessed such total failure of government since the final days of the Roman Empire. A handful of American oligarchs are becoming mega-billionaires while the rest of the country goes down the drain. 

And the American sheeple remain acquiescent.

At the center of a black hole the singularity point has zero volume and infinite density. I know that the singularity is a point in space rather than an object with specific dimensions, but how is it possible for something to have zero volume and infinite density?
The Answer
This is indeed difficult to grasp. Actually at the center of a black hole spacetime has infinite curvature and matter is crushed to infinite density under the pull of infinite gravity. At a singularity, space and time cease to exist as we know them. The laws of physics as we know them break down at a singularity, so it's not really possible to envision something with infinite density and zero volume.

James of Molay (French: Jacques de Molay) (c. 1240/1250 – March 1314[1]) was the 23rd and last Grand Master of the Knights Templar, leading the Order from April 20, 1292 until the Order was dissolved by order of Pope Clement V in 1312.[2] 

Though little is known of his actual life and deeds except for his last years as Grand Master, he is the best known Templar, along with the Order's founder and first Grand Master, Hugues de Payens (1070–1136).

Jacques de Molay's goal as Grand Master was to reform the Order, and adjust it to the situation in the Holy Land during the waning days of the Crusades. As European support for the Crusades had dwindled, other forces were at work which sought to disband the Order and claim the wealth of the Templars as their own. King Philip IV of France, deeply in debt to the Templars, had Molay and many other French Templars arrested in 1307 and tortured into making false confessions.

When Molay later retracted his confession, Philip had him burned at the stake on an island in the Seine river in Paris, on March 1314. The sudden end of both the centuries-old order of Templars, and the dramatic execution of its last leader, turned Jacques de Molay into a legendary figure. The fraternal order ofFreemasonry, which came to prominence in the 1700s, has also drawn upon the Templar mystique for its own rituals and lore, and today there are many modern organizations which draw their inspiration from the memory of Jacques de Molay.

Curse
It is said that Jacques de Molay cursed King Philip IV of France and his descendants from his execution pyre. The story of the shouted curse appears to be a combination of words by a different Templar, and those of Jacques de Molay.
An eyewitness to the execution stated that Molay showed no sign of fear, and told those present that God would avenge their deaths.[18] Another variation on this story was told by the contemporary chronicler Ferretto of Vicenza, who applied the idea to a Neapolitan Templar brought before Clement V, whom he denounced for his injustice.
Some time later, as he was about to be executed, he appealed 'from this your heinous judgement to the living and true God, who is in Heaven', warning the pope that, within a year and a day, he and Philip IV would be obliged to answer for their crimes in God's presence.[19]
It is true that Philip and Clement V both died within a year of Molay's execution
