Temwa presents: Folk, Tales & Magic

Temwa | 19.10.2010 11:22

Music, story-telling and magic to raise money for Malawi
On Friday 19th November at 7.30pm, Bristol charity Temwa will present ‘Folk, Tales and Magic’ at The Folk House, Park Street. A selection of Bristol’s most talented folk musicians, storytellers and magicians will gather for an enchanting evening of fine entertainment.
Line up:
Phil King -

Bristol favourite Phil King has been described as having, "...a voice to die for" (Bob Harris, BBC Radio 2). A review in Time Out, London described his playing as, "a mixture of Damien Rice style heartfelt balladry, John Martyn guitar picking melancholia and the raw energy of a busker." He has performed all over the UK, including at some fantastic festivals including Glastonbury, Bestival, Guilfest, Priddy Folk Fest and Cheltenham Jazz Fest. Phil has supported many touring artists and has had the pleasure to share the stage with many others including Beth Rowley and Alice Russell.
The Foxymorons - A cheeky new folk band emerging on to the Bristol circuit. The band is lead by singer-songstress Jess Lewin on guitar and vocals, joined by a flautist, violinist, drummer/cajon player and bassist to create an infectious mix of original songs and unexpected, quirky covers. Relax and kick back for some seriously happy acoustic tunes, guaranteed to get toes tapping. "Fluid guitar playing and warm voice with its gorgeous natural vibrato; politically conscious songs, based on solid musicianship and a great voice. Just how I like it!" Songsmith,Bristol.

Molly Sampson - Molly Samson is a gifted guitarist and vocalist based in Bristol. With recent shows around the U.K., Molly has been making a name for herself with her deep rich vocals, wild finger picking and unique blend of world folk music. She is currently writing songs for her first E.P. set to be released in spring 2011. Routinely being compared to the likes of Nick Drake, Tracy Chapman and roving Spanish gypsies, she is definitely one to watch.

Kieron the Mighty - An incredible performer with a stylish, jaw-dropping mix of magic, mind-reading and sleight of hand. He has been doing close-up magic for four years and started off on the streets of his home town, Southport, performing card tricks to passers-by. He quickly developed an excellent reputation and the beginning of what has become a career as a professional magician. Since then he has been performing in Southport, Liverpool, Wales, London and now Bristol, where he previously held the residency at the UK's only magic bar, Illusions.

Martin Maudsley - Wandering storysmith of the Downs, Durdles and Valleys... King of the exquisitely told tale. Martin started his professional life as an ecologist but soon developed a keen interest in storytelling through his work at @Bristol communicating ideas about the natural world to children and family groups. He relishes the power that storytelling has, in common with science, to instill a sense of wonder about the world in young and old alike. He has recently performed a number of outdoor story walks called 'Wild Tales', where he is able to interweave folktales and folklore with ecological knowledge about plants and wildlife encountered on the walk.

Information:
Tickets are £7 in advance, £9 on the door and will be available soon from Bristol Ticket Shop or online from here. The evening kicks off at 7.30pm sharp. The full address for The Folk House is 40a Park Street, Bristol, BS1 5JG.
