24 hour occupation of Hyde Park on Saturday 26th of March

Stay 4 one day | 17.03.2011 10:34

On Saturday the 26th of March thousands of people are going to build a huge camp and occupy Hyde Park for at least 24 hours starting at 4pm. Bring a tent and sleeping bag and join us.

The camp will be a base for continuing actions and protests after the main demonstration against government cuts. See the websites below for full details.

blockade the economy, not the parks

Fuck this! Blockade stuff that actually hinders the flow of capital. What's a mass sleep over in a park going to do? Target governent institutions, big business, transport etc. a small number of people can effectively blockade a major railway station/motorway/airport etc

I think the idea is to use Hyde Park as a base for people wanting to do the actions that you talk of.

I'm getting increasing disillusioned with the comments on Indy. It now seems that the standard model is that someone creates a post about an event, and then following comments slag them of for not being proper activists. I bet those that benefit from 'the flow of capitalism' are pissing themselves realising that they don't need to do anything about activists - all the infighting will mean that they are highly ineffective.

So, rather than a reply that says 'fuck this' how about coming up with some ideas for stopping the flow of capitalism, get a bunch of people together (there might be lots of willing people at Hyde Park), and do it.

pacifying the resistance

17.03.2011 14:40

you cannot occupy a public park it is a pointless action probably suggested by the ranks of the tuc/swp to get people to their speeches. lets sit in the same place for 24 hours the police wont even need to kettle us we will be doing it ourselves. a stupid suggestion and a waste of time. stay moving keep the fucking pigs on their toes or get to oxford street with the uk uncut group. this is a day for action not a 24 hour tea party. stop trying to pacify the resistance movement.

Sneaky suspicion

17.03.2011 15:28

At a guess i would say this is gonna be a repeat of democracy village on parliament sq last year. A Set up a camp and stay for as long as possible job.
Same people behind it. Could be interesting. On the day most of the people will be from out of London and may jump back on thier buses home though. But better not to hav it and everyone just riot round London i say. Anyway best time to riot is during the march in my honest opinion. A quick flare up and we're ready to go!

Troll reminder

17.03.2011 16:01

Remember - you cannot take postings at face value. There has indeed been a trend for comments slagging off pretty much everything. Think about it! Who would benefit from spreading infighting and low morale? If you read about a protest you didn't particularly agree with, would you slag it off in public or simply not attend?

not all criticism is trollwork

17.03.2011 18:55

I agree that disrespectful infighting is pointless.

But respectful criticism of a particular tactic, on the other hand, is actually quite useful. How else are we going to evolve and become more effective?

Occupying a park is better than just going home after the march. It creates a visible presence and could serve as a base for other actions. But it's still not the best target for an occupation, that's for sure! And on its own it's not going to achieve much.

Don't get disillusioned! *Anyone* can post here, and it has been shown that police regularly do. Comments probably don't represent the majority of indymedia readers, and definitely don't represent most activists...

There are reasons

17.03.2011 23:30

If you don't like it, do something else useful, but having initially felt the same way about the call fro a hyde park occupation, I have come to realise it's actually a very clever tactic for reasons not to be published openly. This is most certainly not a TUC or SWP move, and check in on Sunday before calling judgement!

You can't always measure the gains of the actions others take

27.03.2011 22:18

Well as my title says, going to Hyde Park was a perfect choice for me. It was a great chance to network, reflect and talk about future action without being bothered by police (who left us alone last night, don't know about today)

I was ready to occupy Trafalgar Square but it all kicked off and we were booted out.

I'm also quite new to the whole protest thing.

This is not the end. Cynicism will not drive us forward. The anger we express in comments like this, to me, is the result of something not turning out how you want or expect it to be. This machine won't be stopped with just one tactic or the 'best' tactic.. but agreed.. we need to hit where it hurts... the park is just a base-camp - or could be one of many.
