the criminalisation of squatting would be a massive own goal

anon | 18.03.2011 23:27 | Analysis | Repression | Social Struggles

So the Tories are going to have another crack at criminalising squatting. This along with their attacks on the welfare state signify a new and disturbing trend - disturbing for them, that is.

Squatting and welfare provide a vital safety valve for many of the excluded - without which London would be like something out of the 19th century. They probably have a master plan to herd all the homeless into hostels / workhouses and force them to work - but this would be a massive own goal.

A lot of Tory policy is all about finding someone weaker than you or different to you and very publicly beating them up. Then the shit-thick Daily Heil readers all clap and cheer and vote for you. But the last thing they want to do is actually succeed. There always has to be some nonconformist wierdo you can bash - if hippies, minorities, and doleys didn't exist they'd have to invent us. There has to be someone they can scapegoat so the retarded masses can let off a bit of steam - otherwise they might just let off some of that steam in the direction of the ruling class, and we can't have that, can we?

But lately our rulers have taken to believing their own propaganda. They seem to think that difference is actually evil, and that it can be defeated. This sort of extreme intolerance is not a sign of strength. It is a sign of weakness and fear. That is why the riot police wear balaclavas now - to hide their pants-wetting terror.

I have a prediction: if they suceed in creating their perfect conformist society in which everyone is the same, it will start to fall apart the very same day. Because their economics are fataly flawed, their models don't have leeway - and it's the human factor (which they are trying to eliminate) that saves the system from collapse.

The government are increasingly rabid and out of touch. But take heart! That is their very weakness.

I think it is a mistake to think that policy is made by foolish politicians, or that had another party been in power the strategy would be substantially different, merely the propaganda. Under both parties communities have been split up, extended families dispersed. This has been going on since the last war. We are landless, our rights are easily taken away. We are all, unless you are very rich in the same boat, not-withstanding your ethnicity, lately many West Indian communities have similarly found themselves pushed out of areas they were once numerous in, and other ethnicities will go the same way. The abolishing of squatting in this country and the sweeping changes that are likely in the role of social housing, owe more to structural adjustment and globalization, than the PR men who form the political parties. We need to see it for what it is, and have solidarity with each other to even begin to oppose this.

not in the mood for party games

Down with parasites

19.03.2011 11:02

I've never met a squatter who thought she had a permanent home. I've never known a squatter who intended to gain something at the expense of someone else. Squatting is about creating a use for the useless, about providing something that should be everyone's right, a safe place to live, without incurring any genuine cost to anyone.

The tories and the press would have us believe that squatters can move into your home while you're at work or on holiday and stay there indefinitely while you shiver in the streets. This is complete nonsense, anyone who can show that a property is genuinely their home can have squatters removed immediately.

What squatters actually take advantage of are properties deliberately left vacant by developers, landlords and speculators. Whether through calculation, greed or simple laziness it should not be acceptable to leave buildings vacant in a time when there are not enough homes to go around. It is the owners of these buildings who are the parasites, helping to create an artificially bloated housing market from which they can then siphon off profits at the expense of ordinary people who just need somewhere to live.

Polar Bear

Reality.

"It is the owners of these buildings who are the parasites, helping to create an artificially bloated housing market from which they can then siphon off profits at the expense of ordinary people who just need somewhere to live."

Amen to that.

Just take a day off work and watch TV during the daytime and you'll expose yourself to an endless diet of property speculation 'reality' TV hosted by presenters Jonty Ponce and Lucy Fuckwit.

Always the same formula.

Here is a house that is up for sale, and here is today's contestent who is going to buy it at auction, do it up, then live off the proceeds of inflated rent for years to come. Its this vanguard of speculators who attach themselves to the housing market because they want any easy income to fund an easy life who are the real squatters. These are the people who live off the state and its program of consumption. I can't live in or buy my own place and have never had the income to do that. All I want is a frigging home.

Scroungers and squatters the lot of them.

What really gets me is the defence they use, "if you work hard then you are able to have the things you want" and the economy is configured to reward those who do work hard. I have spent the last 15 years working hard for the cause of justice and human rights, these herbert's don't know the meaning of hard work. All they are is lazy parasitic slackers bullshitting their way to slovenliness.

Then the government have the temerity to make it an offence for people to use empty buildings for shelter because they are poor. The government aren't even listening to the poor, the poor aren't even on the fucking radar. Its usually the case that these properties are bought at auction because the occupant lost their job or was defaulted by the bank and loses their home and probably ends up on the streets, to a state of poverty and social dereliction.

Then Jonty Ponce and Lucy fuckwit turn up to feed from what's left.

Parasites they most definately are.

To Profit, or not to Profit.
