BNP defeated in Bradford

Braz | 07.04.2011 14:01 | Anti-militarism

BNP Leave the City

The BNP have so far only entered 1 candidate in the local elections in Bradford, what once was a crown in the Jewel has been captured and taken from them.
Victory is ours !

Um... what?

Do you really think that the decline of the BNP in an area is an indication of 'victory' against the far-right?? The relative successes or failures of BNP activity may be a useful litmus test for how many people are prepared to put their money where their mouth is, but this means nothing. Elsewhere, and in other ground (e.g. the EDL), the far right is as strong and as dangerous as ever.

Claiming victory over the BNP and then resting on our laurels isn't going to change the fundamental processes that lead people to the far right. It jsut makes us complacent. Only a politicised anti-fascism that involves ideological and physical confrontation, as part of a broader strategy of social change, can do this.

Ironically, this is exactly what is missing from the anti-fascist 'movement' right now.

The comment did not say this was a victory against the far right, it is a victory against the BNP, the BNP is a political organisation who's aim is to gain power by way of election. In Bradford they have been removed from this opportunity due to hard work and determination, those very same people are working on other organisations, the defeat of the BNP is a milestone in the battle.
The BNP are the flagship and the EDL the sailors, but with nobody to vote for they have no ship to sail, their voice will be going unheard in the ballot box, this isolation, will breed anger, make no mistake, but in doing so they will be seen for what they are.
Anyway the fight continues, the BNP are finished in the once stronghold of Bradford, who's next on the list.

It is a partial victory against the far right

Folks, things are neither 'this' nor 'that', they are often blurred, and so in this case. The decline of the BNP is a victory over the far right in that a lot of long term and senior figures in the UK far right invested loads of time and money in the BNP as a vehicle for their politics.

Given the decline of the BNP, this will be seen by enthusiastic supporters of the BNP as a failure, and as such a failure of the far right. It is a partial failure, because there are always pastures new, but the sudden 'jumping off a cliff' by the 'most succesful far right party in UK history' (as some anti fascists said) IS a victory for anti fascists, even if it is by default.

We should claim a partial victory over the far right with the demise of the BNP, which was very recently causing some anti fascists to hype up their threat to forward their particular line of analysis. Those of us who always said that the BNP was a 'paper tiger' can take some comfort from what has happened.
