The left makes the error of assuming that all EDL supporters are 'meatheads'. Let's leave aside the irony that during the Miners Strike you would have cheered on - and romanticised - the same demographic that composes EDL demos. It is also worth understanding that there are far more graduates and postgraduates who back the EDL than your stunted imaginations can conceive of.

However, Tower Hamlets will be a trial of physical strength. If the left, backed by Bengali youth, can't prevent the EDL rallying here then the game is up. There was a time when you could have overwhelmed any 'right wing' street protest; those days are gone forever. It has been amusing to watch the dawning horror of left wing activists as you have been forced to scale back your initial ambition to 'smash the EDL' - 'whose streets? our streets!', 'if it wasn't for the coppers, you'd be dead', etc - until we have reached a situation where it is the left's demos and even meetings that are under threat.

Tower Hamlets is your last chance to maintain the fiction that you are the majority and you set the terms of political trade on the streets of the UK. If the EDL holds an event on the 3rd then they will be entitled to tell the truth to the left: you're shit, and you know you are.
