A public meeting to discuss what the left should say about the media, in light of the News International crisis, organised by Workers' Liberty.

The News of the World crisis poses the question of what the labour movement should be saying about the media.
The freedom of the press we have in Britain is better than the state control that exists in dictatorships like Cuba or Saudi Arabia, but it is very limited. It is, primarily, freedom of speech for millionaires and giant corporations, for those who can afford to own a newspaper or TV channel. What limited public service media we have are not run democratically.
What do recent events tell us about the relationship between capitalist wealth and power, the media and class struggle?
And what kind of media do socialists want? If we reject both a capitalist "free market press" and any kind of authoritarian state monopoly, what is our alternative? What role can media workers play in the fight for that alternative?
