Nick Clegg now attacking democracy itself!

Dale Needham | 16.09.2011 12:10 | Public sector cuts | Repression | Workers' Movements

Nick Clegg lied about opposing tuition fees, Nick Clegg is collaborating with back-door privatisation of the NHS, and now Nick Clegg is spearheading the biggest covert attack on British democracy since Margaret Thatcher tried to introduce a medieval Poll Tax...

 http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2011/sep/15/shocked-mps-electoral-register-shake-up

"As many as 10 million voters, predominantly poor, young or black, and more liable to vote Labour, could fall off the electoral register under government plans, the Electoral Commission, electoral administrators and psephologists warned... MPs on the political and constitutional reform select committee only realised the implications of the plans following 3 evidence sessions with election experts over the past week... The committee chairman, Labour MP Graham Allen, said they were genuinely shocked. Even Tory members such as Eleanor Laing expressed surprise. The policy has been described by Jenny Russell, the chair of the electoral commission, as the biggest change to voting since the introduction of the universal franchise (the right to vote).

Ministers have unexpectedly proposed that it should no longer be compulsory to co-operate with electoral registration officers when they try to compile an accurate register, in effect downgrading the civic duty to engage with politics... John Stewart, chairman of the electoral registration officers, said the drop-off was likely to be 10% in "the leafy shires" but closer to 30% in inner city areas. He said there would be an incentive not to register as the list is used for jury service and to combat credit fraud. He said he expected large numbers of young voters would not register.

The Cabinet Office, overseen by NICK CLEGG, which had already decided there would be no household canvass in 2014... is introducing individual registration before the 2015 general election. The Electoral Commission said the change would mean 10% of the electorate could fall off the register in as many as 300 local authority areas. The projected 30% fall off in registered voters, weighted towards poorer voters, would require the boundary commission to reduce the number of inner-city Labour seats because the Boundary Commission is required to draw up constituencies with the sole objective of equalising the size of the electorates and not to take into account natural or political borders."

Nick Clegg - Klansman by stealth

I watched Mississippi Burning on TV last night - poor blacks in the deep south were entitled to vote, but who "discouraged" them from doing so? the KKK

Nick Clegg - Watch Out!

16.09.2011 13:39

Here is a fair warning for Nick Clegg or anyone who tries to meddle with the democratic process which results in a decrease of democratic rights.

At a time when we are to witness the largest ethnic cleansing in the UK at Dale Farm, and after Clegg lied to the students about tuition fees, and at a time when pensions are to be slashed, public sector workers paid over £21,500 per annum face a 2% cut in their salary or be sacked, when bullying in the workplace affects a third of the workforce, and the 50% tax rate for the rich is to be abolished - people like Clegg ought to watch out!

As the authroities discovered in Greece and Spain there is only so much crap we can put up with. Fiddling their expenses is one thing but MP's fiddling with the voting system is more unforgivable and just as corrupt.

Leave our democratic rights alone Clegg.

Vote Schmote!

Hmm, I don't reckon it makes much difference whether people have a vote or not. This whole 'democracy' business is a big sham and the sooner we get rid of it the better.

only lasts for a day and serves the 'people with money' only
and keeps the rest of us in slavery
you will work for us they say
for little pay
and you will pay, your duty and this duty and that duty
or were going to lock you away

real democracy is open commons. open the vote on everything, it should be easy now we have the internet. then it will be a case of, if you care about it you will vote on it

Who's up for a democratic party that will open up the vote on everything?

One of the best campaigning angles we've ever been given

To reply to Vote Schmote - to an extent I agree, because even as it stands (and as even Daily Torygraph journos are now freely admitting) the democratic process is systematically abused by those in power, BUT if parliamentary democracy was really a total (as opposed to just partial) sham then Margaret Thatcher wouldn't have tried to use the Poll Tax to stop poor people from voting, and Nick Clegg wouldn't be using these boundary changes to stop poor people from voting now.

Nick Clegg used to be a speech writer for arch-Tory monetarist economist Leon Brittan and Nick Clegg said he believes in breaking-up the NHS as long ago as 5 years ago. IMHO Nick Clegg's effectively a Tory plant within the Lib-Dems, 99% of Lib-Dems are too gullible, cynical and/or corrupted by power to even care, and of course the Tories never really liked poor people voting. Just because however people oppose Nick Clegg making the UK even LESS democratic doesn't mean they're naive about the short-comings of the system as it stands. As with the NHS, we've got to fight hard to hang on to what we've got, not let the multinationals and their stooges get away with stealing even more.

As for strategic options, for the radical movement to be able to present itself as defending society from attempts to undermine democracy is a gift from heaven, albeit a position most of us would rather never have been in - this could be one of the best campaigning angles we've ever been given.

As for practical alternatives, if Anarchism ever changed anything they'd make it illegal ;)

Yes what eyedoubleyou proposes would - IF it ever happened - make society more democratic, and the plans Nick Clegg's pursuing now WILL make society LESS democratic soon (emphasis on the words "if" and "will")

Yes I'm up for a democratic party who would open up the vote on everything, but until eyedoubleyou finds way to make that a practical reality then in reality we need to oppose Coalition plans NOW (instead of - no disrespect mate, but - going in for "if I waved my magic wand" type statements about what we'd like reality to be in a world that doesn't actually exist)

See you outside the Lib Dem conference in Birmingham on Sunday

never had democracy

since the business class elites decide what policy governments should have then its bullshit.
But oppressing the system of voting even further is wrong and has a fascist nature to it

Totally agree with NC being a tory, so why stop there, once you scratch the surface you will soon find an abundance of ex city types in all the main 3 parties and the councils are rife too. Lets face it the whole system is tucked up in favour of the money. They have control and are taking the piss out of all of us.
