No to Road-building

rambler | 25.09.2011 19:28 | Climate Chaos | Ecology | Energy Crisis | Birmingham | South Coast

75 campaigners sent a message to this pro-road building Tory government - Don't trash our countryside. Meeting at three rail stations on the south coast on Saturday (Sept 24 '11) - the three groups converged at the threatened Combe Haven Valley in a protest against the proposed £100m Bexhill Bypass.

Anti-Bexhill Bypass Protest
Anti-Bexhill Bypass Protest

The Bexhill Bypass would destroy one of the most unspoilt and tranquil areas in the South East, home to badgers, bats, lapwings...

It is one of 45 road-building schemes - carmageddons - which are competing for a giant pot of government cash.

Recommendations will be made in December with final Transport Dept decisions in Jan '12.

Retrogade planning decisions which will lead to more traffic: so East Sussex County Council’s plans show that there will be 14% more traffic in Hastings and Bexhill with the new road than without it.

And that's the same with bypasses up and down the country - Newbury etc etc.

Cheaper and more sustainable ways NOW! - walking, cycling and public transport.
Don't lose countrysides and futures in the 2010's. Fight back...

Smash the Carmageddon

26.09.2011 16:44

Well done on starting the long, uphill battle against the swathes of concrete and tarmac waiting to descend on the countryside, in the form of polluting roads and motorways. It is really about time that the movement against automobile overuse was re-ignited (like Reclaim the Streets and the Road Protests in the 1990's), which unites both urban and rural dwellers. While the State subsidises both road building and auto-manufacturers (VAT exemptions, scrapping, etc), Capital profits from both, and People and Nature suffer the consequences. It ties into so many of our current issues: consumer debt, climate chaos, health problems, child safety, and so on. Two links I suggest to warm us up for the fight-back are:

JS Dean's "Murder Most Foul", which highlights the link between automobiles and Fascism (among other things):  http://www.oxpa.org.uk/docs/Murder%20most%20foul.pdf

and...

Ivan Illich's "Tools for Conviviality" - which says that the most efficient speed for society is the speed of a bicycle.

Lets start this thing.......

£millions poured into roads whilst huge cuts happening...

27.09.2011 19:50

The Bexhill Hastings Link Road is one of 45 local council transport schemes that are competing for DfT funding - with 20 of them being road schemes. DfT funding decisions are due in December and now is the time to get involved in stopping the worst ones.

Some of these road schemes are extremely controversial and damaging like the Norwich Northern Distributor Road, the Kingskerswell Bypass (South Devon Link Road) and the South Bristol Link Road.

The councils pushing these road schemes are pouring millions of pounds of their own funds into their pet schemes to reduce the funding requirement from DfT and make them seem more attractive. The figures are obscene. For instance, whilst Devon County Council are putting in £31 million of their own funds to keep this road alive, they have slashed their own budget by £63million and 1740 jobs have been lost within the council.

Campaign for Better Transport has produced comprehensive information about these schemes and an interactive Google map. Please take a look
