Announcing Open Rights Group Sheffield

Richard | 29.03.2012 14:37 | Social Struggles | Technology | Sheffield

Announcing a new digital-rights discussion group in Sheffield

The Open Rights Group exists to preserve and promote your rights in the digital age. We're now holding monthly meet-ups in Sheffield for anyone interested in digital rights. Topics include copyright, privacy, freedom of expression, open data, censorship, digital inclusion, electronic democracy and internet law. The format is a short presentation to introduce a particular issue followed by group discussion.

More information and meeting announcements can be had at  http://www.meetup.com/Open-Rights-Group-Sheffield/

Do you mean no commercial adverts? This isn't one!

29.03.2012 15:13

I'm sorry you feel like that, anonymous commenter, however I think you've misunderstood the nature of my post. The Open Rights Group is not a company - it's a human rights organisation. There's nothing commercial about holding public meetings to discuss the rights of Sheffield citizens.

I checked with someone I know who is involved with this site before I posted and they said this would be absolutely on topic. Other similar groups and meetings are advertised unmolested here too. See  http://sheffield.indymedia.org.uk/2012/03/493475.html, Occupy Sheffield, etc. What's the difference between them and us?

This is the first time I've ever published anything on Indymedia, and while I'm not naive enough to take your reaction as representative of this diverse collective, I don't feel particularly welcomed or encouraged either. Give me a break?

Whats wrong with sharing info??

29.03.2012 15:16

Why shouldn't the meetg in Sheffield be placed on here??

Is it charging a fee??- NO
Is it selling a product??- NO

Seems like activists trying to share info to combat the totalitarian State...

thanks for the information

As more and more of our interactions become mediated through digital communications we need to make sure that we are protected from unwarranted state and corporate surveillance. Thanks for posting about this here.

Please ignore the trolls!

Trolls begone

29.03.2012 15:54

"This is the first time I've ever published anything on Indymedia"

This could well be why the pro-establishment trolls gave you a hard time -- they want to discourage people from using this site -- don't be put off, take it as a sign that you are doing something right :-)

The troll comments have been hidden but can still be read if you use a ?c=all query string if you want to see what the comments above are replying to.

You could also post about the event to Alt-Sheff,  https://alt-sheff.org/ -- the Sheffield Indymedia events listing comes from this site.

Looks commercial to me

29.03.2012 16:51

Sorry but a bit of investigation clearly shows this is a commercial organisation using Indymedia to give it credibility with us here when in fact adverts are not welcome here

This post should be hidden, simple as that.

Funded by members != commercial

29.03.2012 17:11

Freeman: ORG is funded by its supporters and receives grants for specific projects. It makes no profit. It has no shareholders. It doesn't sell anything. It is not commercial. You can read more on their website:  http://www.openrightsgroup.org/

In addition, the meet-ups I'm organising don't cost anything to attend and are open to everyone, regardless of whether they're members of ORG.

How is my post different to Liberty communicating about their events here?  https://sheffield.indymedia.org.uk/2012/03/493475.html

I'm surprised the Indymedia community isn't more welcoming to people who are fighting for our right to express ourselves freely online.

Huh?

29.03.2012 17:22

They're a non-profit campaigning organisation. There's no reason they can't post here.

If you have done a little bit of research then why don't you post links to it? I'm calling your bluff. I've looked around the site and find nothing to be alarmed about. Keep up the good work Richard :D

Do some checking, I did

30.03.2012 07:13

"They're a non-profit campaigning organisation"

Well that simply is not the case, they are non profit on paper however the leaders all receive "expenses" which in reality are wages by another name. I surprised people are so easily fooled however I assume that some of the comments here are from people associated with the company trying to keep everyone in the dark

Honey trap ?

30.03.2012 15:37

Their 'Advisory Councillors" ie the people running the group include

The European lawyer for Google
A senior executive for Yahoo
A journalist for the Daily Telegraph
An e-commerce lawyer
The owner of a "IT market research and media company "
Julian Huppert, Liberal Democrat MP
Eric Joyce, Labour MP for Falkirk
The Chief Technical Officer of XchangePoint, a pan-European commercial provider of Internet services

Doesn't sound like a group interested in 'Open' technology does it ?

Come and find out for yourselves

02.04.2012 08:11

@Not Impressed: It's a public meeting. Why don't you come along? If you're questioning our motivations and integrity you'll get better answers in person. I promise we don't byte. You can register through the site I posted (pseudonyms are acceptable and will be respected - we just need to know numbers for the venue.)

Good try - no cigar

02.04.2012 15:50

What so you can harvest my IP details and then get to turn up in person so somebody can film me and record my voice ?

I think you will find the average Indymedia reader is a lot smarter than that.

Not impressed

use TOR if your worried about your IP address

03.04.2012 20:33

I realise you are either trolling or have mental health issues, but use TOR if you are worried about your IP address. Or just use a public internet connection.

Still failing I see

04.04.2012 09:37

"realise you are either trolling or have mental health issue"

I see so now we caught you out you turn to insults and unsubstantiated claims concerning mental health.

The reality is very clear for those of us here a little smarter than you. Your little group of big IT organisations, lawyers and politicians has been caught out so why not bugger off and leave us alone. You're nobody in the fight for open systems.

Not impressed
