Unity to celebrate Spirit for Refugee Week

press release | 01.04.2012 17:56 | Migration

As you may know the Theme for Refugee Week 2012 is 'Spirit.'

The theme can be interpreted in the following ways:

· Spirit of the Olympic Games/values - friendship, respect,
courage, determination, equality etc.

· Spirit of perseverance - grit and determination it takes to flee
persecution and rebuild your life.

· Community Spirit - the integration and welcome shared between
refugees and local communities

Unity is very happy to announce its contribution to this year's Refugee
Week which, this year, will run between 18th-24th June

After careful consultation with our members over the last few months we
have managed to arrange a special and unique way to highlight the theme of
this year's Refugee Week as well as to introduce a lucky group of asylum
seekers to some of Scotland's best known traditions.

Thanks to the generous support from friends and supporters at the famous
'Imslaughtered Distillery' on Islay, one of the Inner Hebridean islands on
the West Coast of Scotland, staff, volunteers and members of Unity plan to
spend Refugee Week carefully sampling the wares of the eight whisky
distilleries located on the island.

Unity collective member, Justin Time, commented "I'm really looking
forward to this year's Refugee Week, it promises to be a truly unique
experience for everyone. We are extremely grateful to the distillery
offering to help us in this way. Already most spaces on the coach have
been booked up so people should hurry to get a seat if they want to join
us for the trip."

The experience will be a true celebration of the community spirit often
found in parts of Glasgow on a Saturday night as well a way of
strengthening the bonds of friendship between Unity members and our
volunteers as they visit the distilleries and sample the world famous
products.

Unity's charity development worker, Phill Maglassupp, added ""We'll be
experiencing a real panoply of Scottish culture. I'm sure there'll be
improvised singing and dancing during the trip and everyone will get a
chance to join in. It looks like the best Refugee Week yet"

The group of asylum seekers and the charity volunteers and staff will stay
in bed and breakfast accommodation on the island after travelling there in
a luxury coach provided for free by "Inyer Dreams Travel"

On the return journey the group also hope to visit the production site of
Scotland's other best known National drink - the Irn Bru factory in
Cumbernauld. Here they will discover the reviving qualities of this best
selling soft drink often used as a traditional hang over cure.

Unity will be applying to the Scottish Refugee Council for additional
financial support to help fund this trip.
