Contrary to much of our popular received wisdom, the BPP were not simply a gang of violent anti-whites. Rather the BPP were a radical anti-imperialist, anti-capitalist force who had to be brutally repressed by the American state. Their Ten Point Plan ( http://www.blackpanther.org/TenPoint.htm) included demands for:

* an end to imperialist wars
* decent housing for all
* full employment
* free health care
* community control of resources

The BPP came together over the issue of police brutality, but were also strengthened in numbers by the ongoing war in Vietnam and the failures of the non-violent civil rights movement.
