Wandsworth Washout!

Malatesta | 25.11.2012 12:36 | Anti-racism | London | South Coast

The EDL 'international' demo in support of jailed career criminal Tommy Robinson was a dismal affair with hardly 50 showing up!

Crivvens! Jings! And Help Ma Boab! Yesterday’s ‘international’ EDL demo outside Wandsworth was a washout in more ways that one. The idea was for Mr Tommy to hear ‘1,000s’ of EDL voices wailing in support as he sits on the nonce wing with only the Muslim Imam for company. If he was expecting this rousing chorus he is going to be very unpleased indeed! After a rather and amusing schlep around the rainy streets of Clapham we eventually found the nick and never have we been so pleased to get to jail. We stood by watching the sodden 50 odd EDL standing there, half aresedly making an effort to be heard and chanting ‘Free Tommy Mandela’ or other such nonsense to the bemusement of the equally drookit polis. Never have there been so few cops for an EDL do as yesterday and the small amount of local constabulary present illustrates what they think of Britain’s Fastest Shrinking Protest Group, i.e., nothing more than a very minor inconvenience.

We stood next to the demo in our best ‘Tommy Is A Nonce’ t-shirts but could tease nary a rise from the EDL mob who weighed more than they numbered. We saw that toothless gimmer from the miniscule Brighton lot as he and a mate were coppering up outside the off-licence. The cheeky wee radge asked us for 50p only to be told to ‘go and sell some pegs round the neighbourhood, you little scrote’ and he ran away. One EDL steward remarked to us ‘This is rubbish! Tommy is the new Jesus. Why aren’t there more people here.’ Hapless Dave ‘Bullet Head’ Bolton, who was battered by his own ‘mates’ at Walthamstow, was stewarding away and wandering about like a total bugle clearly annoyed that so few people showed up and no doubt relieved plod would prevent him from getting another kicking.

After a while we decided to head off to drier environs as this was clearly a waste of everyone’s time. We ended up in the Falcon only to find ourselves sitting adjacent to a severely dejected EDL group who began to cheer themselves up with large amounts of Stella (and cocaine too judging by the wraps my more experienced comrade found in the toilets!). Chumly fascist Trudie ‘Muffin Top’ Toker kindly opened the door for us thus allowing us to clandestinely photograph her generous proportions, however good taste required us to burn the negatives. (Trudy, ‘clandestine’ means secret, love!).

Not only that but EDL balloon Kevin Smith has left the organisation as his long suffering missus is now a Muslamic convert thus bringing the wrath of the fading fascists down upon both their houses! Anyway, this was supposed to be the last EDL ‘national’ action of a truly appalling year and it was extremely piss-poor. Mr Tommy will hardly be ultra-chuffed at such a weak display of solidarity as he will be spending Christmas in jail – despite the FACT that THEY have banned it! Be Seeing You!

PS: apologies for not hooking up with folk yesterday. This was due to abysmal phone reception!

Great, but....

I'm honestly not trolling, and not having a pop, coz I wasn't there myself (up to other anarcho-mischief tho!), but what response did militant anti-fascists give the EDL?

I saw a bunch of Internet posters about 'chasing EDL mugs', but have heard little if any chasing. If any went on, then great, and I obviously understand that if you've just given someone a kicking, you won't brag about it straight after on the Internet.

But, it seems that alot of the hype surrounding militant anti-fascism (especially the physical confrontation stuff - were often quite good at the mass direct action stuff) never lives up to expectations.

Once again, not havin a pop, but interested in others views

Hardly worth bothering

Judging by this report and the piss-poor turnout on other EDL activities recently, it hardly seems necessary to chase them off everywhere they go. I'm all in favour of militant action against fascists that pose a threat but the EDL is a has-been organisation. With Tommy Robinson in jail for now and his co-leader Kevin Carroll more interested in pursuing a political career with the British Freedom Party (another no-hope group) the EDL is falling apart and doing a pretty good job of fighting itself.

We should remain vigilant against the EDL of course but I expect comrades had more useful things to do than chase EDLers away from outside a prison listening to speeches about how Tommy Robinson is a political prisoner who has been jailed for his views rather than remanded in custody on criminal charges because the court considered he would abscond or commit further offences on bail.

I don't think

folk with any security sense would be bragging about it over the internet/phones if any confrontations did happened.

silence is

Yeah, but....

25.11.2012 17:24

I did say in my first comment that I didn't expect people to detail their own fash bashing exploits. However, a group of militant anti fascists quite widely advertised a counter mobilisation. As far as I can tell, nothing happened. It's demoralising for the wider movement to see quite militant stuff organised and then get no feedback to let us know if it went well. If there was a success, we need to celebrate it. If it was a washout on our side, we need to look at what happened to question why, and how we can improve next time.

It's very possible to give a general report of even a militant action without giving specifics of dropping anyone in it.

good comments!

Kate, it was a very poor do for the EDL and we were there for about 5 minutes then nicked off for a drink and a blather. They are over. The infighting has done more for them than anything – people really HATE hel gower! Anti-fash must remain aware but as far as a threat goes for now, they are nothing.
Towny! The ‘Malatesta’ pieces do give general reports and are very careful in removing anything remotely incriminating or detailed. ALARM put out the call and then didn’t properly organise or give info out. I did ask for an RV point but they said, understandably, that they didn’t want to do this for obvious reasons. Fair enough but if folk put a call out, they need to give us an idea of where to plot up so we can turn up in numbers! As it was we couldn’t meet up with any other anti-fash on the day which was a pity but as it turned out pretty unnecessary but i would really have liked to hook with ALARM and others pushing the Anti-Fascist Network!

Malatesta - i've got no problem with your reports, which are always informative and a cracking read.
You've answered my question about the action - shame we coudn't have pulled it out of the bag. Ah well, onwards and upwards

Towny!

malatesta, i like reading your reports, funny and all, but I think EDL are far from being completely over, they are on the verge but we should push them over and make sure this is really end of that story, instead of saying "oh well, its over now, they only get 60 people out" and then give them breathing space. Now is the best time to finish them off and your conclusions unfortunately don't help in inspiring excitement amongst the people opposing EDL. Complacency can be very dangerous. It ain't over till it's over!
all the best

cheers!

thanks for the nice comments, much appreciated. we have no intention of letting the EDL alone for foreseeable. they have suffered an enormous downturn but as 'Beating The Fascists' says: if you cant destroy them when they are weak, how can you destroy them when they are strong!'

Bigger more important targets

26.11.2012 19:43

The EDL are a joke, even Fash types think so. Their attempt to create BNP Lite did well for a few months but as a political movement it all imploded ages ago. I don't understand why people bother opposing them, it just gives them a bit of publicity and boots their feeling of importance.
