Bomb Diffused Close to Next G8 Summit Hotel

Francesca | 25.03.2013 11:56 | G8 2013 | Globalisation | Policing | London | World

According to the BBC in Northern Ireland, a bomb was found 'abandoned' a mere 16 miles from the hotel due to hold the next G8 summit in the UK.

Link to the article here -  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-21911598

Clearly, or more than likely, the work of Republican or Nationalist rebels (and therefore probably not in any way directly 'related' to anti-globalisation 'trends' or groups), the incident underlines the already tense situation in occupied Ireland and the massive 'police presence' mentioned in the article is linked directly to the up coming G8 summit, which is still many months away and gives clues to those attending counter summits and protests as to the extent of what the state response is likely to be.

Naturally, we know that all the stops are pulled out at the G8's, from surface to air missile batteries to sound-guns, from thousands of 'extra' police to full military personnel with fully armed weapons, tanks, dogs, horses, you name it, we've seen it all in the last couple of decade.

The interesting thing about the holding of the G8 in occupied Ireland is that there is already an ongoing war against the PSNI (cops), with multiple attacks and attempted attacks on police targets in the last few years, including shootings and bombings, arson and riots. Most recently a prison officer was shot dead on his way to work, also thought to be the work of IRA-affiliated, or so called 'dissident'
activists.

So the police will more than likely be expecting a rise in bomb attempts or shootings in the run up to the summit, they will certainly plan for it and put in place 'counter measures': road blocks, infiltration to sympathetic campaign groups, massive police presence, raids on known activists...the usual scenario. However this time they could, and probably will, use the threat of 'real terrorism' (as they see it) to target anti-globalisation activists in Dublin and Belfast. Just these past few months the PSNI were given millions of extra funding for the police operation. On top of up to 3,000 UK police (from england, scotland and wales) volunteering for 'action' during the summit (BBC 26/02/13) the PSNI, which stated this would be their 'biggest ever operation', is 'gearing up', a reaction we have witness many times in all the police states of the world before a big summit. Most conveniently for them, the police use this build up and presence during the summit to actively and wantonly suppress any dissent, peaceful or otherwise.

This 'battle ground', as they will create, is therefore to set the scene for whatever the anti-G8 protestors will muster, whether they come from abroad or from within occupied Ireland itself. Various groups are planning to descend on the summit, from what I can gather, and some groups will be targeting London and I am sure other cities around the globe. But it is interesting to see that already the police in the area are faced with 'incidents' that will test their resolve to allow the summit to pass off 'peacefully'.

I am sure, and I guess my admittedly loaded words won't help to paint this picture, that the days of Genoa, Prague and Seattle are long and truly gone: the system has learnt hard and well from the past to ever let us get a hold on the streets like we did in those days.

However, in a place like occupied Ireland, the home to repression and insurgency for a few centuries shy of a thousand years, the G8 really is puffing out it's chest and saying 'we will go where we want to do our business'.

I just wonder if anyone, group or individual has plans to mess up THEIR plans in a spectacular fashion.

Oh to dream...

And remembrance of those lost during our battles, for Carlos...

So-called dissident republicans

25.03.2013 13:01

Whilst there is a significant Republican threat in Northern Ireland, with two police officers, two British army soldiers and a prison officer killed in the last five years it is important to not over estimate the threat of Republican paramilitaries. The various paramilitary groups are divided, there has been numerous arrests, and the majority of bombs are either intercepted or defused.

Interestingly, one of the leading paramilitay groupings, the Real IRA, has bombed banks and released anti-capitalist statements. A new development.  http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/oct/25/real-ira-admits-attacks-banks and  http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2010/sep/14/real-ira-targets-banks-bankers

Republican Sinn Fein, a political party associated with one faction of the Continuity Army Council of the IRA is holding an 'alternative anti-imperalist congress'.

harry duggan and jack.

Harry - yeah you're right the 'threat' is not to be over stated, although there has been an 'escalation' in recent years, not just bombs, but shootings, kneecappings, robberies, car jackings, hoaxes and riots. Lots of these have involved members of various groups. I only referred to the 'dissidents' as 'so called' as that is what the UK/Irish press call them. I find the term slightly offensive, as mostly those groups have kept in line with the original IRA aims of pushing the UK from Irish shores and to be called dissidents some how gives legitimacy to those groups that have used the political platform to gain better political rights, and others rights like housing and jobs, for what was the under class in Ulster for many years, the nationalist/republican/catholic public, yet at the same time those groups, like the Provo's, have left behind the original IRA fight. That is for reasons that are too complex to go in to on this piece! But I am sure you understand that the provo's came about to fill a gap where the Real/Official IRA were absent in Derry and Belfast during the late 60's and early 70's for lack of funds, wider support and weapons (not least because of their 'failed' campaigns of the fifties).
On the streets in those days, the people needed defending, and so those members of the communties, the jerry adams' and the bernedette devlins and the martin macguinesses stepped up to support their people. The provo's were born from that need and so the situation in the north these days is a direct result of that rising up of the provo's and their hold on the struggle, which they always saw as being about freeing the people of ulster, getting them jobs, getting them votes and making them safe.

Therefore the term 'dissident' is in a away offensive to the original aims of the IRA, the complete removal of UK interests, economically and politically from Irish soil, as those groups wanting to carry on that aim are looked on as and reported as being 'fringe', 'dissident' elements. But in reality, the Real IRA/OFFICIAL IRA and Continuity IRA were always wanting to uphold the original IRA aims. The provo's simply said 'hey we've got where we wanted, we fought for it and have won' so they decommissioned hundreds of weapons and stopped the urban fighting.

But the original aims never went away.

I'm sure you know all this anyway, I was merely saying it to get across that I understand the wider IRA history in the north, but in relation to this article, I was merely pointing out that to be so close to the hotel of the upcoming G8 is a extra headache for the cops, as they are in fact already at war with 'dissident' IRA volunteers. and bombing banks is great news, i didn't know they had done that.

Jack - 16 miles is close enough when it comes to the G8. the police will be operating well outside of that range when it comes to the meeting actually taking place. so i reckon 16 miles is rather close, as the article even states the bigger police presence in the run up to the G8.

16 miles - not what you call close was it. Considering the history of NI I would think one could find an abandoned bomb 16 miles from anywhere there.

Well maybe thats where you are doing wrong. You are trying to think.

If there was a bomb "16 miles from anywhere" there would be at least 20 in NI

It was Óglaigh na hÉireann wot dun it

25.03.2013 18:42

Óglaigh na hÉireann - possibly the most competent of the republican paramility factions have claim responsibility. They claim its destination was the hotel hosting the G8. In the last month they have also been responsible for a diffused mortar bomb attempt on a cop shop and an unsuccessful bomb attack on a police patrol.

They were the group who injured copper Peader Hefron, killed cop Ronan Kerr and killed the screw on the motorway in retalitation for the treatment of Republican prisoners in Magahberry...

Strategy of Tension

25.03.2013 23:39

Remember what happened during the G8 summit in Gleneagles in 2005? The 7/7 bombings!!

The only plausible reason for siting the 2013 summit in the same town as one of the worst ever dissident Republican atrocities is to draw the fire of "Real" IRA, and certain misguided fools on the far-fringes of the Anti-Fascist scene have allowed themselves to be lured into the hard-line Republican axis in order to try to implicate as much of the radical movement as possible in the political fall-out from and back-lash against the inevitable forthcoming terrorist atrocity. Don't say you weren't warned!

meanwhile in london during the g8 we need to embarress the state, we need to stir up some shit in the streets.

lets not get distracted by the city, we need to aim for the west end.

we need to make the kids in the estates know exactly what is happening.

lets aim for the west end... anti war groups, UK anticut, coalition against poverty, enviromental groups... all of them, get them doing somthing.

"lets aim for the west end... anti war groups, UK anticut, coalition against poverty, enviromental groups... all of them, get them doing somthing."

Can you please explain why you are giving the G8 summit attendee's publicity by turning up at these protests and making them all seem far more important than they actually are?

Nobody listens to the political agenda the G8 summit attendee's are proposing, its just a tool for the US to maintain dominance of its provinces.

Turning up and creating a circus allows the US to spread its dominance where it isnt wanted.

You should be ashamed of yourselves for claiming that you are fighting imperialism, while at the same time acting to legitimise and spread the agenda of that imperialism.

Shameful, absolutely shameful.
