Two stupid comments here. Soldiers join and fight for a number of reasons, some are linked to poverty, some to a sense of 'doing something'

Were those who landed on the beaches of Normandy to destroy the Nazi horror to be classified as above ? I don't think so.

Were the British Army soldiers who liberated Sieera Leone or Kosovo monsters ? I don't think so

Suggest you see the bigger picture and stop posting 6th form black and white analysis because it makes you look somewhat stupid.

The soldiers of WW2 were conscripts, unable to say no if they wanted to. Driven into battle by the Jewish banking interests who had planned the war and safe in their London mansions. They were not heroes, they were sheep whose lack of education meant they believed they were fighting for "God".

Where would Indymedia UK be without some nutter linking a subject to Jews ?

The post above alleged that "the Jewish banking interests who had planned the war" not that banks and other multi-nationals profitied from it. It could be argued that company or individual who took part in the war profited from it but that would be a stupid argument rather like much of what has been written here.

"Jewish banking interests" did not plan WWII anymore than the Bush family planned 911 despite what some people on the internet would have you believe. The Allied soldiers and those of the Soviet Union were fighting one of the very few true manifistations of pure evil and many of them sacrificed their lives and their futures so that sad, lonely, bitter, unpopular individuals without the guts to identify themselves could insult them from the safety of their empty little bedsits.

If anybody who wrote the above is a real man who wants to defend what he has written face to face then contact me using any of the details below. I bet not one of you has the guts.

Indymedia has its share of Walts and Urban cowboys like Klamber in the same way that the Guardian comment page has its closet Nazis. The key is to look on them with detached ammusment as a source of fun.

Anybody who has been in the services can tell you stories of people mouthing off in pubs etc about "their time in the army and getting all the basic info wrong. And of course every pub has it's 'Klamber' the one who served with 'THEM' and who can kill you with a pencil and a book of matches.

In many ways I'm not surprised that Afghans have been killed in the way alleged, the very act of war drives individuals to random violence through repeated exposure to death and injury. I served in the Falklands and found it very difficult to return to civilian life after I left the army that included a time sleeping rough. Another poster above talked about the many reasons that people join up. For me it was having a father and older brother in the army and living the army life from a young age, I never even considered alternatives, I knew of soldiers who escaped abject poverty in Scotland and the North East and others from comfortable Middle Class homes who wanted to "see the world and have some excitement". I met one who very openly said he found the idea of killing someone "thrilling" ( he himself was killed at Bluff Cove). I certainly never felt like some mercenry or Queen's hired killer. I helped defend Europe from a totalitarian regime in Russia that wanted to invade, I assisted Catholics on the Falls Road who had been kneecapped for refusing to pay protection money to the INLA, I carried in my arms the injured body of a 10 year old boy blown up by a bomb in Belfast planted by Loyalists and I helped liberate the Falkland Islands from a country that used the war and sacrificed its young conscripts to divert attention from a financial crises.

Not all soldiers are the same like not all coppers are the same. However Walts like Klamber are all the same and that's why they deserve to be laughed at.

Really good post, thanks for that. I worked or a while at a shelter in Manchester for rough sleepers and it always shocked me how many ex army people there were among them although I have to say the Royal British Legion were just superb in helping them - a charity that is probably doing more for homless people than just about any in the country.

Your statements about why people join the army, navy and air force were very similair to the stories I heard but I also spoke with men that said they joined up to "make a difference" or to "change the world a little bit". One told me he was a Jew who was determined that nothing like the Nazis would ever be seen again and felt he had a duty to try and stop people like them.
