Act now: fash on the attack in Calais

No Borderer | 22.02.2014 16:53 | Anti-racism | Migration | Repression | World

Solidarity needed NOW.

Kevin Reche, on the right
Kevin Reche, on the right

Urgent antifascist solidarity is needed for comrades and migrants in Calais, following a week of elevated fash activity in Calais.

The focal point has been a squat in Coulogne, a suburb of Calais, which has been surrounded by an ugly mob of up to 50 bigots and cops on/off for the past week. The crowd have been throwing rocks towards those inside, which has caused part of the roof to cave in. Earlier in the week, several drunk fascists tried to sledgehammer their way into the building.

This frenzy of bigotry and hatred has been whipped up by a group called 'Sauvons Calais', led by Kevin Reche, the swastika-sporting kid pictured above. 'Sauvons Calais' have been using a Facebook page of the same name to post pictures of activists and migrant squats for targetting. They call on people to share information on the location of empty buildings seen being used as shelter by desperate people trying to escape the cold and stuck at the border; and encourage each other to find out the details of activists. The page is being used to rally people to target squats.

ACT NOW -

1. Shut down the Facebook page: Go to the page and click the flower icon next to the Message button to report it for harassment/threatening behaviour. If enough of us do it, it might just work!  https://www.facebook.com/page.sauvons.calais

2. Share this info on social media; get friends to report the FB page too.

3. Go to Calais to support our comrades.
Call: 06 45 46 59 86 (from inside France)
00 33 6 45 46 59 86 (from outside France)

nazi trolls again

23.02.2014 18:08

Im reliable informed this post is made up, can we not keep fash trolls off here?

fake post

@fake post

23.02.2014 21:29

You've offered no reliable information whatsoever to suggest that this post is fake? Odd.
By the way, the luttennord site linked above looks sound enough and supports the article.
Fash trolls? Really?

Sniff em out

@fake post

23.02.2014 21:48

You're butthurt about the antifa legoland article you made up and posted here being hidden, I understand, that's gonna hurt but please don't think indy are so stupid they would remove a post without reliablle info that an article is bollocks, some are SO not as thick as you.

proof that the article is NOT fake

23.02.2014 21:51

For proof that the article is not fake, see the CMS blog; anyone familiar with our work will know we have been using this blog address for years and the latest posts there corroborate this article:
 https://calaismigrantsolidarity.wordpress.com/

Ask yourselves why someone would accuse this article of being fake, when it is clearly not.

People are urgently needed in Calais, as the situation is escalating worryingly. Presumably the person accusing this article of being fake wants to discourage people from heading over there, at a time when they are most desperately needed.

not fake

23.02.2014 22:28

this call-out is most certain not fake; a group of people including me responded to this call-out and went to the squat in Calais to find the squat with cops in front and 50+ fascists on the other side of the road. Very hostile environment, when we were walking back to our car cause we didn't feel safe multiple cars with fascists drove by very slowly staring at us, when we almost got back to the car a group of 15 fascists turned up shouting we need to get out of the town, pushing us and in the end throwing rocks at us while we were running away (after 30 more fascists suddenly turned up). Kevin Reche was obviously one of the leaders, taking the lead when it came to shouting abuse, pushing and the first one to pick up rocks.

Definitely not encouraging anyone to stay at home, the people in Calais need your help and they really need it now, but please do be careful and be organized while entering the area of the squat. We were all casually clothed so don't draw any suspicion at all. Just to let you all know what you are able to expect. Support for the squat and against the fascists is more than needed.

Just noticed that a callout appeared days ago on the newswire, but was not promoted:
 https://indymedia.org.uk/en/2014/02/515508.html
...and, thanks to the decision to make a promoted newswire the default, probably went un-noticed by many people. Something to think about - I realise there are pros and cons to both.

UPDATES Monday 24/2

24.02.2014 10:36

A group of people living inside a squatted farmhouse in Calogne, on the outskirts of Calais, have been under attack for several days by a gang of fascists at times numbering up to 80. The gang "Sauvons Calais" ("Save
Calais") is an anti-immigrant group led by overt fascists including the swastika-tattooed spokesman Kevin Reche. As the fascists throw rocks and molotovs, and attack the house with sledgehammers, the police have watched laughing. The people living inside the farmhouse are doing their best to hold up as the attacks escalate, and not give in to fascist violence. But they need much more support.

See here for previous article with background:  http://indymedia.org.uk/en/2014/02/515552.html

Sunday 23/2: A message from the inhabitants of 122 Rue Émile Dumont in Coulogne
(suburb of Calais).

We're writing to you again with the latest news from the front. Our aggressors have reached a new level of violence. On Saturday 22, we were attacked by intensive volleys of stones from two in the afternoon until
half past midnight. Around 4.30 pm, one man who had threatened on the facebook page of 'Sauvons Calais' ('Save Calais') to kill some migrants and throw them into the canal threw a rock, from 6 metres away, which hit
the neck of a friend who had gone outside to talk with some of the neighbours. When we went outside to eat in the garden, we received a rain of some 20 stones in just a few seconds. As the numerous attacks on the
roof and the windows went on, the crowd shouted encouragement every time a stone hit its target. As the most violent attack of stone-throwing was going on, the collective 'Sauvons Calais' was publicly hosting a buffet
outside with food and coffee, between 6 pm and midnight. They also used laser pointers against cameras and directly into the eyes of the inhabitants (legally these can be considered as weapons in this context). There were a maximum of 80 people protesting (at about 10.30pm), the last of them left around 1 am.

During all this afternoon and until about 1 am, the police (National Police and plainclothes 'Brigade Anti-Criminelle') were present, up to 8 in number. They were notable in their passivity, only intervening on two
occasions in total. The first time, while our friend was hit by a rock to the neck in front of their eyes, they took him into their police car for less than a minute, then let him go. Another striking event was when a drunk man arrrived with a packet of fireworks, the police confiscated a few of them and then let him approach the house with the rest. Indeed they went so far as to hang the protestors' banner on the fence, and some of
them were laughing as our attackers showed their joy when the stones hit their target. The police allowed the protestors to come right up to the gates of the house, while they stood watching a metre behind.

The police left a few minutes after the last protestors and, five minutes later, a white pick-up truck parked at the corner of Rue Aristide Brillant and Rue Haut-Champs. Two men got out and walked towards us, then t asurned away as the police briefly drove past. The two men then returned with Molotov cocktails (beer bottles) in their hands, which they lit in front of the bus stop. One of the molotovs was thrown onto the roof. Fortunately
it did not catch fire, but then they threw another which rebounded off the side of the bus stop and landed in the garden where it burned. We called the police to report the attack, they refused to listen and demanded to
know our identities.

After one of us explained that he could tell them everything that happened, and could describe the attackers' vehicle, but wanted to stay anonymous, the police left. One of us went into the garden to find the debris of the molotov cocktail. A police car drive past again and he tried to show them the evidence, but they only shone their torches in his face, refusing again to record the event. We wait with much apprehension the days to come. After the molotov attack, what next?

UPDATE 8AM Monday 24/2:

Local Calais media are reporting the demonstration of around 50 racists continued through Sunday. The fire brigade were called after a group of men were spotted nearby by neighbours with jerrycans of petrol to prepare more molotov cocktails.

CALAIS DEMO SATURDAY 1 MARCH

24.02.2014 10:51

ASSEMBLY AGAINST FASCISM AND FOR TOLERANCE. AND SOLIDARITY

Call-out from anti-racist residents of Calais.

Gathering with music and dance, words and food.

Saturday 1 March 2.30 PM. Place d'Armes, Calais.

We are indignant to see that hundreds of people are living in the street whilst houses are empty and abandoned. Indignant about the passivity or hostility of the authorities and for the demonstrations of fascist hatred in these last days.

These fascists do not represent Calais. There are also many more people who have been engaged for years, as individuals or with groups, in hospitality and openness.

Whether we are long term residents of Calais or passing through, we will come to share a moment of tolerance and solidarity.

*Samedi 1er mars à partir de 14h30 place d'Armes à Calais.*

There are more people leavign comments on the sauvons calais website. Getting all these names, it should be quite doable to pinpoint the addresses of at least a few of them. By sending the supporters of that site a clear message delivered at their home, is the only way i can see the tide turn on this. The weak point is they know where you are, but you don't know where they are. Without a plan, some people can go there, but what are the chances they can help without a plan, and facing that mob? This requires singling out. Maybe hacking some sites to know more - either way

You should report the page via 'It shouldn't be on facebook'

24.02.2014 21:20

If you report the page via 'It shouldn't be on facebook' you can give 'hate speech' as a reason why not. If you report it because it's harassing you can't give a specific reason.

Facebook says the page "does not violate community standards"

24.02.2014 21:23

I reported the page and some posts for having a 'credible threat of violence' and got this response:

Thank you for taking the time to report something That You May feel violate our Community Standards. Reports like yours are an significant part of making Facebook a safe and welcoming environment. We reviewed the page you reported about theft or vandalism for Containing and found it Does not violate our Community Standards .
Note: If you-have an issue with something on the page, make sour you report the content (eg a photo), not the Entire Page. That way, your report more Will Be Accurately reviewed.
We understand you still want to see May Not this Page. Here are a Few Things you can do:

I then reported the page for something else and INSTANTLY got more or less the same response. Looks like there's an autoresponse set up and they've stopped reviewing the complaints.

I really hope that Ludo's last comment was intended as satire. "What else can we do?" - In this case, how about going to fucking Calais, raising money for Calais Migrant solidarity or organising anti-fascism here?

As far as I can see there's no more than a handful of folk on the ground in Calais but a vast army of useless twats who's idea of activism is an e-mail to Zuckerburg's minions asking them to take down a Facefuck page.

This particular appeal has been "shared" and "liked" by thousands - How many will make it to Calais?

Facebook complaints ???????

25.02.2014 10:49

Speaking as somebody who was working in the jungles over the last summer I can tell you that the migrants there will not give a fuck about a complaint to facebook !!!

What the hell is wrong with you people ?

Holding my head in shame

diversity of tactics

25.02.2014 19:50

The call to report the facebook page was suggested as an idea of something people might do if they're not able to drop everything and go to Calais, and even if they only have a minute to spare between other commitments. Of course it's far from enough. But then, on the big scale of things, no one action, not even the most militant or committed, is by itself going to be enough to stop this kind of shit. This struggle needs lots of people acting in all the ways we can. And also (probably this should have been stressed in the article), it takes all of us thinking for ourselves about what we can do to act, wherever we are.

quit your hardcore macho posturing. as another person who's spent plenty of time in calais i'd urge people to think strategically about actions, like (yes, relieving people on the ground), but also undermining fascist communications systems - the point is the page is being used as a place to inform on squats and activists, and needs taking down in whatever way possible.
