'World Day for Animals' Campaign to close

Still Fighting | 12.11.2015 12:07 | Animal Liberation

At last year's animal rights gathering where people normally plan the following year's world day for animals in laboratories, there was a long discussion about why numbers on marches have been dropping over the last few years, and whether people thought it might be more effective to focus on local group actions instead of a national march. It was felt that it would be inspiring for local groups to organise their own events and may enable them to get some new people involved however that has not been successful and we have made the difficult decision to close the campaign.

The animal rights movement in this country is probably now the weakest it has been since it really got started in 1984 and we did not take this step without a lot of discussion and thought.

We will maintain the website as an archive of the wonderful, inspiring, loving and committed people who did so much to raise the profile of vivisection in this country.

The fight of course does go on but with different tactics and probably different people.

Thank you to all those who supported us.

For the animals, for all animals.

Others of us are still fighting

While the boring safe a to b marches are over other people are taking the fight to the abusers and their supporters. In October a shop selling leather in Hemel Hempstead had its lock glued and the cars of the emplyees were covered in painted slogans.

SHAC until the day I die

A shame but this is part of a trend

I am very sorry to hear this announcement but I am not surprised.

The fall off in organised animal rights protest has been achieved by some of the most sustained political policing the UK has ever seen with many infiltrators doing massive damage to campaigns and people's lives by their undercover work.

Discovering as I did that a person I thought of as a trusted friend was a policeman has devastated me and has had the effect of making me abandon all AR work for the past two years, I simply do not know who to trust anymore outside of a tight small group. My partner and I now prefer to volunter at a local donkey sanctuary and make our contribution that way.

I think it is also worth saying that the lifestyles of some individuals in the AR scene raises questions. I stood on High Streets throughout the South East of England for nearly three years raising money for SHAC and other groups and I did not enjoy reading how the money was spent sometimes. I managed to run a local branch of SHAC supporters and organise many protests and actions without taking a penny from the donations and I do not see why others felt it was ok for them to do it.

Today we have a HLS that is just as deadly and horrific as it was when the campaign started, despite the spin that some have put on it we achieved nothing in real terms and some wonderful people have ended up in prison. For what ?

"the cars of the emplyees (sic) were covered in painted slogans"

Do you really think this is a contribution to the fight for animal liberation and rights ? Do you really think this will make them think twice about working in a shop that sells leather or is it more likely to make them think you are just stupid vandals ? Actions like this do far more harm than good.
