Cambridge: March Down Mill Road

Cambridge IMC | 05.04.2003 19:37 | Cambridge

The Cambridge anti-war movement split into two parts today.
About 75 people marched down Mill Road at 11 am, while others headed off to the BBC/US Embassy actions in London.

The Mill Road march, called by the local Green Party, blocked traffic by walking down the street, despite the best efforts of the police to keep people on the sidewalk. Passers-by reacted well to the Schnews literature that was distributed, and many motorists honked in support as they passed by in the opposite direction.

The demonstration ended with speeches on the lawn at the end of Mill Road. A variety of Green Pary candidates in upcoming local elections spoke about the fact that the war was a major concern for most of the people they talked to in their local canvassing, and drew connections between dependance on fossil fuels and the current war. They advocated a rapid transfer of public resources to renewable energy research and implementation efforts instead of military expenditure.
