Naming of the Dead Ceremony in Cambridge

Dr Douglas Griffith | 18.08.2009 17:31 | Anti-militarism | Terror War | Cambridge

Cambridge Stop the War and other Cambridge residents to hold a Naming of the Dead Ceremony for British troops and innocent Afghan civilians who have lost their lives in the war.

Details in brief
Date: Wednesday 19th August
Time: Meeting 5.15 pm to start 5.30 pm
Location: Corner of Market Street/Sidney Street (opposite Marks and Spencer and Next in Cambridge).

Cambridge Stop the War (CSTW) activists and other Cambridge residents will be holding a Naming of the Dead ceremony on Wednesday 19th August at 5.30 pm in the Market square, Cambridge, to remember the victims of the war, and to continue our campaign to see UK troops withdrawn from the conflict in Afghanistan.

The number of British troops killed in Afghanistan has now reached 204. The rate of deaths is rising and shows no sign of abating. The number of Afghan civilian deaths is not even monitored, but is thought to be over 30,000. The elections in Afghanistan this Thursday are adding to the tension, but offer no real hope to the Afghan people.

The US, UK and allies are stuck in a situation where they state they 'cannot afford to lose' and yet their strategy seems set to bring only more death, destruction and despair to the people of Afghanistan, and instability and danger to the region.

Following on from the Naming the Dead ceremony, members of the trade unions, political parties and faith group will speak briefly on the nature of this conflict and why we must continue to protest until this war ends.
