Iranian asylum seeker, Omid Karimi, speaks out against racist police and asylum

NWASDG, 17-11-2007 20:43

Omid Karimi is a Kurdish asylum seeker from Iran. The Kurds are an oppressed minority in Iran. Britain deported 315 Iranians between January and June 2007. Thousands of asylum seekers are left to rot, slowly starving to death on electronic vouchers; many are not allowed to work. Many are forced to live in appalling conditions including in the worst housing, while the British Home Office's NASS-contracted accommodation providers like M&Q, make huge profits every year.

The following is a letter sent to NWASDG from Omid Karimi after he was arrested one night after an argument with one of the four people squeezed into a 1-bedroom house in Longsight, a suburb of Manchester. Under these conditions conflict is inevitable. The ultimate responsibility lies with the racist British Labour government whose racist asylum laws oppress asylum seekers, disperse them to areas where they have no social support and forces them into poverty, destitution and homelessness. - NWASDG

Northern Assurance super-glued shut as protest against Brook House

No Borders, 02-11-2007 10:13

The locks of the Northern Assurance Building were super-glued shut in the early hours of Friday, 2 November. This was an act of sabotage against FD Tamesis, housed in this building, intended to highlight the company's involvement in the construction of what will be the UK's largest immigrant deportation centre, Brook House near Gatwick Airport. 2 November is a national day of action against Brook House, called by the No Borders network: across the country, companies with a hand in this new deportation centre will be targeted, pressuring them to end their involvement. Fatma Navruz's life is in danger as Britain attempts deportation to Turkey! Octo

NWASDG, 20-10-2007 22:10

FATMA NAVRUZ MUST STAY!
19 October 2007

Message from the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Refugee Forum (NNRF)

Contact: Konnie Lloyd for more info:  konnie2006@talktalk.net>

'Ms Navruz is a 54-year-old woman who is suffering from considerable problems of ill-health. She has no less than three different appointments scheduled for this week at the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham – one for an endoscopy, another in the department of Thoracic medicine, and another with her psychiatrist. She has further appointments pending because she is suffering severe pain requiring treatment for pain relief and physiotherapy. Ms Navruz's consultant states that she is suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, anxiety and depression, which they say is in keeping with her accounts of torture, rape and imprisonment in her country. She is also suffering from psychosis. The fact that Ms Navruz has not been able to prove torture and rape at the hands of the Turkish authorities for her political actions in support of working people in Turkey and the Kurds in particular is not a surprise to anyone who has worked with survivors of both torture and rape – two of the most heinous and hidden acts of terror to the individual.

The Uthayakumar family must stay! Stop deporting Tamils to Sri Lanka!

NWASDG, 20-10-2007 21:45

On 5 September immigration authorities snatched a Tamil Sri Lankan family from South Benwell, Newcastle. The immigration police pounded at the door of the Uthayakumar family home at 7am and demanded access. The family were informed that they faced deportation and were made to pack their belongings under the supervision of immigration officials from North Shields Immigration Reporting Centre. The family is suspected by the Sri Lankan government of having connections to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and would be in extreme danger if deported.
