Mitchell wrong, says City Councillor

John Tanner, Oxford City Labour Councillor, will launch the campaign this week about the far-reaching effects of the World Trade Organisation on communities throughout the world, including Oxford. The WTO meets in Cancun, Mexico this week, the outcome of which could threaten local services in Oxford. Cllr Tanner attacked Cllr Mitchell’s recent comments (Ox Times, 29th August) and said “I am sure most people in Oxford care about developing countries and don’t agree with Cllr Mitchell.”

News from Nablus

Yesterday morning Israeli forces imposed a curfew on the Old City of Nablus, announced on local television and radio, in response to the third suicide attack in the last 7 days, this time in Jerusalem. Tanks, jeeps and other IDF vehicles entered the city to enforce the curfew and carry out searches for Hamas members thought to be hiding in the city. 14 men have been reported arrested; one 16 year old boy was found in possession of explosives. Indian Fascist Minister Responsible 3000 Dead Seeking UK Corporate Investment

Chief Minister Modi of Gujurat in India is visiting the UK 17/8 to seek British corporate investment. Member of the Hindu far-right party which admires Hitler, in February 2002 he told police chiefs not to intervene to save the lives of Muslims being massacred by Hindus in communal riots - or 'pogroms' as they were called in the 1930s. The result - 3000 died. He is also the Minister responsible for the infamous Narmada dam project. Asian groups will be protesting at his visit to Wembley, London, 17 August THIS SUNDAY!!!! The Trade Justice Movement’s major event happened this morning from 10am till about 12.30
At Oxford Town Hall
Trade Justice event supported by Oxfam, Christian Aid
and WDM

Andrew Smith, MP for East Oxford, came and discussed trade issues in an open meeting with people from his constituency. Antiwar activists protested outside due to his pro war stance and a refusal to engage in a public debate about the war. Evan Harris also came and talked with his constituency. Read more >>
