Two Otters shot on Skye

It is quite ironic that we have two laws to protect our wildlife but time and time again they cannot be enforced. Let me give you three examples in the last few months. The Eurasian Otter (Lutra lutra) is listed under Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and also the EC Habitats Directive implemented through the Conservation (Natural Habitats) Regulations 1994. These mean that it is an offence for any person to intentionally kill, injure or take otters.

And yet three otters have recently lost their lives through stupidity and deliberate criminal acts. The cases all involve otters from different areas which have been killed or wilfully taken from the wild.

GENETIC MODIFICATION - FOOD FACTS REVEALED

The following article is intended to give a brief introduction to this hot topic. While much of the GM controversy at present is centred on 'environmental' concerns, and with good reason, there is an equally important question to GM food crops: whether they are safe to eat or not. If they were safe and wholesome, then 'cross-contamination' from GM crops might be slightly less of a serious problem. The article does not detail the obvious hazards of growing GM crops which create pharmaceuticals (causing problems in the US), nor the complex changes to EU regulations now in the pipeline but still widely regarded as dysfunctional.

'If you think the Clearances are gone, think again'

CHRISTA and John Hale visibly fill with pride as they describe how they have transformed their beloved Highland home from a dilapidated wreck into a rural idyll.

Rented 13 years ago to fulfil the Hale's dream of retiring in their favourite glen in Edzell, Angus, the couple have spent more than £50,000 on the farmhouse in which they expected to spend the rest of their days.

"We are very scared and threatened. No one has the means to stay here."

But now they, and about 20 other families, are to lose their homes as they become the victims of the latest ruthless Highland clearance by one of Britain's richest families.

And to add insult to injury the Hales and their neighbours have been offered £10 by the Cayzer family to show prospective buyers around their own homes.
