Swindonians are still Together On Planning

Simon, 10-04-2005 16:53

Wait for the results of the public inquiry
Bright sun and a chilly wind greeted the people of Swindon as they assembled in Faringdon Road Park on Saturday 9th April 2005 for the second STOP (Swindonians Together On Planning) march. Placards spoke out against various unpopular planning decisions in and around the borough of Swindon, and many different signs were in evidence which made use of a subverted version of the orange Swindon Borough Council logo. The protestors marched through the Railway Village, past the Mechanics Institute, through the town centre to a rally outside the Civic Offices. Read more | 2 comments >>

Given partial information regarding the activities of Coca-Cola in India and Colombia, the National Union of Students' buying consortium met in Liverpool this week and renewed a contract with Coca-Cola. Hands around Coate Water

Simon, 13-11-2004 19:06

Join Hands Around Coate poster
On a cold but clear and sunny Saturday afternoon, the edge of the lake at Coate Water was bounded by a chain of over a thousand cardboard cut-out hands, each with someone's personal dedication of why Coate is special to them, held aloft by Save Coate! campaigners and supporters. Will this be enough to convince Swindon Borough Council, Redrow & Persimmon Homes, and the University of Bath, that we want Coate Water Country Park to remain a country park, not a town park surrounded by concrete? Who gives a **** about Swindon Town Centre?

Simon, 19-09-2004 21:21

"Who gives a [tick] about Swindon Town Centre?" - Swindon Civic Trust's stall
On Saturday the 18th September 2004, two very different ideas were being presented to the public in the Brunel centre in Swindon. One concerned the town centre, and the other concerned the land at the south-eastern edge of Swindon, known as Coate. One was being promoted by employees of a local planning company, the other by volunteers for a local charity.

Although these two stalls may have appeared unrelated to the casual observer, they were in fact inextricably linked, by the University of Bath and by issues of town planning, development and accountability to the public. Read more | 2 comments >>

Shaw Forest saved, but new threat to Coate

Simon, 25-07-2004 21:15

Shaw Forest - saved!
Swindon Borough Council "... reaffirms, and will continue, its existing policy of support for the Great Western Community Forest plan, and specifically council owned land at Shaw Forest Park (which includes Phases 1, 2 & 3), and resolves that these sites should be protected and retained as Community Forest for future generations." But will they show the same support for Coate? Read more | 1 comment >>

Residents protest to save community forest

Simon, 02-05-2004 19:37

Junction of Mead Way and Hillmead Drive
Angry West Swindon residents yesterday assembled in their hundreds and more to protest against Swindon Town Football Club (STFC)'s plans to build a new stadium and 'sports village' on the site of a community forest. There was a bit of a traffic jam while they crossed the road, before taking a walk round the forest to reclaim it for the community. Read more >>
