UG#691 - Big Drugs,Big Money& Big Guns (Deep State from Afghanistan to Susurluk)

18-09-2014 16:50 | Afghanistan | History | Terror War | Sheffield | World

Audio
We begin a new series this week, looking at the global drug trade and its key role in funding deep state groups. We begin with an expert on the Asian drug trade, Alfred McCoy. His 2010 talk, "Low-Intensity Conflict in the Drug Wars" focuses on opium production and its relationship to the proxy wars being fought in Afghanistan. We follow the heroin westwards to Turkey with a commentary by Sibel Edmonds who focuses on the nexus of the political and intelligence agency leaders, mobsters and drug traffickers which was brought to light by the "Susurluk scandal". This fateful 1996 car crash lead to the development of the phrase "Deep State" to describe the behind-the-scenes arrangements which were previously hidden from public view. While details of their operations remain unclear, they are increasingly understood to be more important to what really goes on than the for public consumption charade that is electoral politics.

Noam Chomsky and the willful ignorance of 9/11

30-11-2013 09:27 | Afghanistan | Anti-militarism | Social Struggles | World

In response to a question at the University of Florida recently, Noam Chomsky claimed that there were only “a miniscule number of architects and engineers” who felt that the official account of WTC Building 7 should be treated with skepticism. Chomsky followed-up by saying, “a tiny number—a couple of them—are perfectly serious.”

If signing your name and credentials to a public petition on the subject means being serious, then Noam Chomsky’s tiny number begins at 2,100, not counting scientists and other professionals. Why would Chomsky make such an obvious exaggeration when he has been presented with contradictory facts many times?

Michael Gove deserves to be tried for aiding and abetting Blair's war crimes

27-08-2013 17:10 | Afghanistan | Anti-militarism | London | World

Today’s DAILY MAIL front-page about MPs demanding a debate on Cameron’s plot on attacking Syria is a vacuous one. MPs will NOT halt Cameron. they didn’t halt Blair in 2003! The "broadsheet" the London daily the INDEPENDENT is blocking comments that expose Michael Gove's role as Tony Bliar's Goebbels via the BBC during the years of the Blair GW Bush attack on Iraq and Afghanistan. This behaviour is forcing observers to ask: it isn’t, is it? the ‘it’ and the innuendo-ed state being ‘independent’!
Whatever might have caused the ‘Indy’ to sink to the gutters as another courier of unconstitutionality, rampaging lies for warocracy!

Bradley Manning reads out his statement - pic by Clark Stoeckley

UPDATE: Verbatim transcript of Bradley Manning's Feb 28 statement now online. Thanks to Alexa O'Brien.

Yesterday in court Bradley Manning read out a long statement explaining the background to the leaks, how and why he had come to send the files to WikiLeaks, what had motivated him, what he hoped would happen as a result. This statement was not initially available, so this article has been compiled from tweets sent from the court and afterwards by Alexa O'Brien, who has been reporting on the case from the beginning.

Iraq: Was it Worth It?...Are You Kidding?

15-02-2013 15:56 | Afghanistan | Iraq | Terror War | London | World

Today marks the ten year anniversary of the day over a million people marched against attacking Iraq. The papers are full of ‘Iraq: Was it Worth It?’ articles. To those of us implacably opposed to this attack, such a question is as ludicrous as asking ‘The Holocaust: Was it Worth it?’ The bogus War on Terror and the neoliberal principle of intervention for profit under the guise of extending democracy has made the world a more dangerous place. Pursuing this ideology in the face of mass opposition has made the world a less democratic place.
