Gaza Protest London: Police violence and media under-reporting

13-01-2009 23:07 | Analysis | Palestine | Social Struggles | World

Anti-riot cops facing the crowd
Sadly all British Media contributed to both the under-representation and misrepresentation of the Gaza protest in London last Saturday the 10th of January. Not only they failed to criticise the obvious fiasco of the metropolitan police who positioned barriers on the pavements leaving no way out to the crowd when anti-riot officers pushed in, they also refused repeatedly to publish photographs depicting the unjustified attack of anti-riot officers against protesters, freelancers and passers by.

IMEMC Special: White Phosphorus and its use in Gaza

13-01-2009 13:35 | Health | Palestine | Terror War | Sheffield | World

Press TV Images of WP use in Gaza
White Phosphorus (P4) is a waxy fat soluble colorless or slightly yellow solid with a garlic smell that is not naturally occurring but is produced in the laboratory. It is highly reactive with oxygen (ignites spontaneously upon drying and exposure to air) producing compounds like P4O6 (phosphorus pentoxide) and P4O10 which upon contact with water becomes oxophosphoric acids (aslternatively direct reaction with water can lead to phosphoric acid HPO4 through some intermediate compounds)

Spirit of Humanity sets sail for Gaza.

12-01-2009 21:53 | Anti-militarism | Palestine | Social Struggles | World

UPDATE - 3 hours into the journey, the boat appears to be turning back to Cyprus. According to the Jerusalem Post, "Karin Pally told The Associated Press that a generator blew three hours into the 24-hour trip, forcing the 66-foot (20-meter), Greek-flagged vessel to return to port in Larnaca.

The Free Gaza Movement's new boat the Spirit of Humanity, left Larnaca Port at 3pm (local time) this afternoon - bound for Gaza port, where it is due to arrive at 11am tomorrow. The boat has been acquired at short notice, to stand in for the Dignity, which was rammed three times and fired on in international waters on 29th December,2008. On board the Spirit are several tons of medical supplies, and a number of doctors, surgeons, parliamentarians, journalists and activists, all intent on showing solidarity with the people of Gaza in the face of the crippling siege that has been visited upon them for the past eighteen months.

The Free Gaza boat 'Spirit of Humanity' has sailed from the Cypriot port of Larnaca carrying doctors, parliamentarians, human rights observers and journalists. Israeli press reports suggest that the Israeli Navy plans to attack the boat in International or Gaza waters (the former would legally be piracy). The previous Free Gaza boat, the 'Dignity,' was rammed and had to seek refuge in Lebanon.

Eye-witness account of London Gaza Protest 10th Jan '09.

11-01-2009 17:26 | Palestine | World

As ever, there has been no accurate reporting of yesterdays Gaza protest in central London. The main news channels are reporting the police estimates for numbers of between 15,000 and 20,000 or simply claiming there were tens of thousands, with violence being caused by a small minority.Stop the War estimated there to have been 100,000 people present. Most mainstream news channels are also reporting the 3 police injuries sustained but so far I have seen no reports of protester injuries of which I know there were many- some, from an eye-witness perspective, seeming serious and caused by violent policing. So here is my account. I kept notes throughout the day so the timings are pretty accurate.
