On Saturday April 15th around 300 people marched through Manchester as part of international protests against immigration detention [ call out and more details] People came from Leeds, Newcastle and elsewhere to join the protest and included many asylum seekers and refugees.
The March started outside Strangeways Prison where asylum seekers are being detained for working illegally. The demo went along Deansgate, past British Airways who deport asylum seekers, and then stopped outside the registry office where people from Brides Without Borders spoke about their campaigns and experiences. The March continued on to China Town where the cockle picker s who died at Morcambe Bay were remembered and it ended in a rally at the Peace Gardens.

This demo follows a demonstartion at Colnbrook and Heathrow Detention centres last weekend and over 100 detainees on hunger strike.

The George Fox 6 have lost their appeal against their convictions for aggravated trespass brought about for protesting at a corporate conference hosted at Lancaster university. In his judgement, Judge Baker dismissed the appeal. He found that when the appellants entered the conference they did so as trespassers with intent to disrupt and obstruct a lawful activity.
In a move to attempt to limit the impact of local solidarity protests, the authorities had moved the case away from from Lancaster to Preston.

Around thirty protesters succeeded in blockading the entrance to the Runcorn Alcoa factory near Manchester late Febuary. People locked onto each other with armtubes and for nearly three hours all traffic to and from the factory was halted. Alcoa were targeted because of their involvement in the Karahnjukar dam projects in Iceland.
The campaign is growing and intensifying as the Icelandic government and Alcoa's plans for devastation of the Icelandic landscape expand.

A Critical Mass in Febuary was stopped and dispersed after police declared it was an illegal assembly. Around 25 cyclists were moved onto the pavement by a contingent of 6 police cars and vans. The ride was not allowed to continue.
The bicycle ride started at the Central Library with circa 30 riders. It was the winter's most successful ride, despite the freezing temperatures.
After an hour or so, a police van and 5 police cars blocked the cyclists' way and issued everyone with a warning. A handful of people did manage to cycle away.

"I can assure local councillors and residents that the views of local people are paramount and will be taken into full account before any decision is made." Councillor Newman, Manchester City Council's Executive Member for Housing.
On Feb 15th Manchester City Council proceeded with proposals to demolish the Kingsley Avenue Neighbourhood of Moston, despite public opposition from residents and stakeholders. MCC has decided to proceed with declaring the Kingsley Avenue Neighbourhood a clearance area for demolition. This is despite strong local stakeholder opposition from home owners and residents.
During a public consultation period in October formal representations showed that only 20% of respondees supported the demolition proposals. However, according to Save Kingsley Avenue Neighbourhood this did not give the result the Housing Department wanted who added in what they called ‘informal’ representations.

Once again it is ordinary people who are taking the initiative tackling the threat of climate change. The first Saturday of the month, a group of cyclists pissed off with the ever increasing amount of dirty, dangerous and downright ridiculous 4x4s which are accelerating climate Armageddon took to their bikes and donned skeleton outfits to shame 4x4 drivers.
On a similar theme Manchester's Critical Mass - a street demonstration of the cycling alternative to car traffic - continues the last Friday of every month. Looking ahead Dosummat are starting to plan for a Manchester neighbourhood at the camp for climate action happening later this year, with the idea of building links in Manchester between people wanting to take action on climate change.

On Sunday 5th February, over 40 people gathered on Lumb Lane, Hollingworth, to decorate the trees and hedges overlooking the line of the proposed A628 Mottram-Tintwistle bypass. Longdendale was, until recently, an historic farming community, where ancient customs survived and were respected.
The scheme proposed in 2004 comprises the construction of a 6km by-pass for the villages of Mottram, Hollingworth and Tintwistle, and modifications to the A628 and A616 corridor between Tintwistle and junctions 35a and 36 of the M1. The road building plans, as they stand at the moment, threaten the unique landscape around this area, more specifically the beautiful Longdendale valley, the nature reserve of Swallow's Woods, open moorland, and as some have argued, ultimately the whole of the northern Peak District by laying the groundwork a future major M1/M67 link road.

A hunt supporter is being sought by police in relation to an allegation of Criminal Damage after a hunt saboteur was attacked and had his video camera smashed as he monitor attempted to film the hunt. The incident occurred as the Cheshire Forest Hunt met at Peover Hall, Over Peover (near Knutsford) which also serves as the hunt kennels.
Hunt saboteurs were present to monitor the hunt and film any incidences of illegal hunting, as they believe the hunt have been attempting to use the cover of a bird of prey to mask attempts to continue hunting in defiance of the hunt ban. The incident comes just 4 days after the kennel huntsman of the Avon Vale Foxhounds was arrested for attacking a hunt monitor and taking their camera.

Over 100 school children took part in a rally last Saturday 5th November 2005 to demand five of their class-mates are brought back from Uganda. Sarah Hata and her children - Dennis, Hope, Maureen, Peace and Moris - were taken from their home in Wigan, detained, forcefully taken to three planes within 48 hours and finally, without warning, removed to Uganda on the 26th October 2005.
Councillors and teachers joined pupils from St Thomas More RC High School and St. Cuthbert's Primary School as read they out letters they have written to Prime Minister, Tony Blair, and sang "Give Peace a Chance". They demanded that the Hata family are returned to their home in Wigan from Uganda whilst their solicitor continues to make representations on their behalf.

Over 500 marched in Bolton on Saturday in solidarity with the Sukula family, against Section 9 of the 2004 Asylum & Immigration Act and for an end to all immigration controls.
The Sukula family is one among many who after the proposed introduction of Section 9 is threatened to be separated and have their children taken into care. Their pledge for asylum was rejected and they do not receive any benefits. Bolton City Council still refuses the implementation of Section 9, currently tested in a few northern councils which would oblige them to take the kids of the Sukula family into care on the grounds that their parents cannot support them. The council argues that this would violate Section 20 of the 1989 Children Act and the cost of it would be higher than continuing paying benefits to the family. The support of the Sukula family and the opposition against Section 9 brought together groups and unions from various northern cities and towns. Two unions decided in a consensus vote of their members to refuse to participate in implementing Section 9. Speakers reminded the crowd of the importance to build local and regional networks of solidarity and resistance aganist the racist policies of the British and EU governments.

On Monday 26th September, the trial of the George Fox 6 commences at Lancaster Magistrates Court. Six student activists face charges in a three day trial arising out of an action that took place at Lancaster University in September 2004 where protestors had gone into the George Fox building at the university to hand out leaflets and talk to people at the "Corporate Venturing" Conference - a networking meeting for multinational corporations. Speakers at the conference were drawn from controversial arms manufacturer BAE Systems, Shell and other companies the six say have 'long histories of human rights abuses and environmental destruction'. Police attended and told the protestors they were doing nothing wrong, but some months later they received summonses through the post. The defendants are seeking support at the trial.

On Friday 24th June at 6pm outside Manchester Central Library cyclists shall meet for one of the most spectacular critical masses Manchester has seen. They will be joined by cyclists from all over the world who are cycling from Brighton to Edinburgh to join a week of protests against the g8 summit early in July.
Groups in Manchester have been busily preparing for the summit. Affordable travel from Manchester is being organised by Dosummat, the local contact group for the Dissent network. Dissent have secured a large rural convergence space where camping will be available and Manchester groups mobilising against the G8 will set up a marquee and kitchen.
A Manchester based group of 'Pro-capitalist' jokers are threatening to march in support of G8, whilst the Laboratory of Insurrectionary Imagination has appeared in Hulme Park as part of its UK tour.
G8 Ministerial meetings have already taken place in Derby and Sheffield [Reports: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 ] and been the scene of some lively protest and at times fairly over the top policing.

"Our protest site must and will continue to exist in order to protect our beautiful hillside" Nine Ladies Protest Site
Last week the High Court gave its verdict regarding the classification of the quarries at Lees Cross and Endcliffe in the Derbyshire Peaks. The quarries are now (or still) officially dormant. However according to the Nine Ladies protest site this does not mean that victory in the fight to protect the woodland and the stone circle has been secured.
Under the ruling the quarries cannot reopen until the peak park have agreed a set of working conditions for them. Stancliffe Stone still have the permission to quarry from 1952, and the peak park still have the power to revoke the permission, or to impose such restrictions that the re opening of the quarries would be financially unviable. So until there is no possibility that Stancliffe can quarry the protest appears set to continue.

After a year-long campaign against their involvement in the fur trade, fashion retailers Selfridges have followed Harvey Nichols and declared that they have stopped selling fur in their stores.
On the 19th May, Selfridges confirmed that they have now stopped selling all real fur. A year long campaign saw the various Selfridges stores including Manchester, Birmingham and London being picketed, a concerted customer complaints campaign, and associated actions.

So kids, did you have a good time Manchester styleee? Hope so, because I certainly did. I have been to going to parties in Manchester centre, outskirts, Wales and Leeds; for a number of years. This was one of the most exciting parties I've ever been to down at the old hospital again. This event will surely be remembered for a long time for good and unfortunately relatively minor bad reasons.
For in excess of 99% of the time and for 99% of the people; this night was an amazing experience, of unity, freedom, celebration, understanding and peace. With a huge number of sound systems attending and an amazing Victorian setting, this meeting was an event not regularly witnessed. A creation of freedom for freedom, and a sly finger-up to the laws and lores of modern western society.

A Planning application has been made to put 600+ homes and a CHILDREN'S NURSERY there. Please could you "call-in" the Spodden Valley plans so that SAFE decisions can be made.' Laura Livsey, age 11
Rochdale. In Rochdale’s Spodden Valley a huge quantity of asbestos may lie buried on the land where the world’s largest asbestos factory once processed the killer fibres. There are no plans to clear up this hazard, but there is a lot of interest in digging up the site. Developers Countryside Properties want to build on it. However, their controversial planning application has been put on hold.
Concern has already been raised about the way large piles of crushed rubble are being disturbed by a JCB digger and driven through Rochdale in open wagons.
Campaigners are now asking that the plans be "called-in" to the ODPM. Meanwhile, in an apparent bid to sabotage the campaign to save Spodden Valley, Countryside Properties have bought up internet domain names that include combinations of the words “save” “spodden” and “valley”.

Irlam, April 8th. Workers arriving at the Caterpillar - Perkins site in Greater Manchester were surprised, first by a 30 foot yellow banner with an acrylic image of a Palestinian, head in hands, whose house is being demolished by a Cat bulldozer while an Israeli soldier stands guard.
The banner flew from a mound of grass along the private road to the security gate, the only entrance this morning. Management had hunkered down on red alert with police and dogs on site since 2 a.m. expecting an invasion under cover of darkness, for some reason.

"Since the letter of warrant is hanging on your head you may be killed by this special squad RAB without observing the due process of law."
Zahangir Alam, a father and husband who has lived in Salford for nearly three years with his wife Naima and his sons, Jubaer (10) and his baby Jamiul (18 months), has been deported by immigration authorities from Manchester airport. Alam has been deported in spite of the fact that he has been recently told that his life is under severe threat should he return to his home country.
Alam was a politician in Bangladesh when he had to flee for his life because of his membership of the Freedom Party. The Alam family, who authorities have already attempted to deport, have consistently had poor representation during their asylum process. Their former solicitor has reportedly admitted he didn’t know what he was doing and documents have been mistranslated and lost. Alam's wife and young family remain under threat of deportation.

Strangeways on the case again. The only crew who continue to represent the party scene in Manchester. This collective is like a machine that dont stop, and if they say they are gonna parrty, they will. Regardless of anything that might get in their way. For example if they cant get a venue, those in the know still get to party in their basement!
So they got the venue together at the last minute, and a fine huge warehouse it was too. A bit far outta town, but not hard to find. Strangewayz setup with the projectors atop the huge van. Amazing visuals, the main projection was 60+ feet across, plus a second projector and lazers. The system seemed to be runnin as it should. The scoops pumping out enuff bass when you were close up. Although they were experiencing problems with the generator and they lost power a few times. They got this sorted out and kept the party rockin.
