At Prime Minister's Question Time, Tony Blair was asked if he could guarantee that the Environment Agency and Health & Safety Executive (HSE) can protect the public against asbestos from the Spodden Valley

The Prime Minister replied:
"I am looking around the Chamber, but I am afraid I am not getting a great deal of help. [Laughter.] "

There is still confusion over which government and council agencies have powers and responsibilities over the site of what was the world’s largest asbestos textile factory. A consortium headed by Countryside Properties wants to build 600 homes and a children’s nursery there.

Was the public’s chance to question the council- ‘Gone in 60 seconds’...?

BBC TV North West Tonight investigates the controversial Spodden Valley planning application.

Were Councillors and the BBC misled over asbestos test results?

Jayne Barrett of BBC North West Tonight reports that residents in Rochdale are today calling on the office of Deputy Prime Minister to for a Public Inquiry because they suggest that developers have seriously misled town councillors and the BBC over important facts about asbestos contamination.
