UK IMC should organise around Bio-region

mayler | 01.09.2005 15:13 | Ecology | Indymedia

It makes sense to me for Indymedia to move out of the state constructs of 'state' and 'region' by redefining ourselves as part of a bio-region we reconnect ourselves to the ecology on which we depend.

I found a map of bio regions which i will attach

stuff

Agreed - kind of

I think I kinda agree. The city thing doesn't always make sence althought indymedia traditionally is city based. UK indymedia was one of the first to break the traditional by having a 'national' imc and later 'corrected' things with the reginalisation process. however, the regions are (for the most part) still city based which perhaps makes sence in terms of a community of people prepared to form collectives to maintain a imc site but leaves much of the country out in the cold.

Where is the map?

How do you define a Bio-Region?
This is not of the quality we have seen in the past from Mayler. Are there various Maylers?

areas and group establishing process

02.09.2005 10:43

It is theoretical to demand what IMC UK should do or not do if it is practically impossible.
As Imc Scotland, we unfortunatelydo not truely represent the whole of Scotland- most active groups are city based, and that is also where most of the protests happen, which are reported on.
Just by calling ourselves a bigger area, does not make us at all suddenly inclusive.
Also if you are based as a political individuum somewhere in the countryside, it is much more difficult to motivate you on and continue to be involved, particularly if there a disagreements or arguments around the political process.
Missing humanand group interaction can not be neglected even on an internet based project.

interesting proposal

02.09.2005 14:12

Interesting proposal which possibly merits more discussion on the process email list - which would be the appropriate place to make the proposal and get it discussed and possibly implemented.

I just wanted to make the point that cities do generate their own ecology, and might be seen therefore as 'bio-regions' in themselves. Just to muddy the waters...

this article was just a means of attaching the map (which can be viewed by clicking the blue dot) the discussion will happen on process list as suggested..

- Sure i'm not demanding anything just saying what i think and providing a resource.

As Imc Scotland, we unfortunatelydo not truely represent the whole of Scotland- most active groups are city based, and that is also where most of the protests happen, which are reported on.
-accepted, this proposal grew out of the fact that every month or so we do get voluneers comming forward from places that do not have a imc- people from Northhampton for example, if we had some kind of regional structure then they could contribute at that level..

Missing humanand group interaction can not be neglected even on an internet based project.
- I agree that that is _really_ important, the regional aggregation sites that i was immagining would not be a replacement for a active collective based around the urban centres- it would just provide a means for those collectives to situate ourselves geographically.
