Friends of Mohammed Isahq Ibrahimi

John O | 20.03.2008 16:31 | Migration | Social Struggles | Workers' Movements

He is currently detained in Harmondsworth Immigration Removal Centre and is due to be forcibly removed from the UK on Tuesday, 25th March at 20.30hr by Hamburg International Airlines 'Ethnic Charter Flight' PVT008 to Baku for onward transit on flight PVT085 to Kabul.

Mohammed Isahq Ibrahimi is a young man who is originally from Afghanistan but who has lived in Bolton, Greater Manchester for 6 years.

He was arrested and detained on January 6th and has been in a state of limbo since then.

He is a Shi'a Muslim of Hazara ethnicity and claimed asylum because of his fear of persecution because of his ethnicity and religion. He left Afghanistan at the age of 16 and has no family or friends there who could give him support if he came under attack, which would make him extremely vulnerable.

Isahq is thoroughly integrated into British society and has been an active member of various community-based projects and initiatives. He has shown himself ready and willing to help others in a variety of ways and has been as asset to the community.

In his determination of 15/02/08 the adjudicator, Mr. J. Gillespie, said "There are undoubtable compassionate factors in his favour, arising out of his community work and selfless endeavour in Bolton and amongst deprived refugee and migrant person which compassionate factors are enhanced by the delay in decision to which the appellant has been subject"

According to the Human Rights Watch World Report for 2007
Afghans face escalating violations of their human rights at the hands of a variety of abusers: the Taliban and other anti-government insurgent groups, including Islami and tribal militias, criminal groups and local warlords (many with government affiliations), and, increasingly, the Afghan government itself. The United Nations aid workers doubled in 2007 to cover one-third of Afghanistan. Violence and insecurity in 2007 made it a bloodier year than any since the US-led forces ousted the Taliban in 2001.

Afghanistan mission close to failing - US
After six years of US-led military support and billions of pounds in aid, security in Afghanistan is "deteriorating" and President Hamid Karzai's government controls less than a third of the country, America's top intelligence official has admitted. Mike McConnell testified in Washington that Karzai controls about 30% of Afghanistan and the Taliban 10%, and the remainder is under tribal control.  http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/feb/29/afghanistan.terrorism
