Two firebombings target UCSC vivisectors

3rd August
Two University of California-Santa Cruz research scientists were targets of firebombs early Saturday, showing another sign of the escalating direct action and violence against university researchers who use animals in vivisection labs.

What sort of 'people' keep putting their families through this?
Vivisectors - just quit.

Experts from the Mercury News:

A car belonging to a researcher parked at a home on campus was firebombed, destroying the vehicle. In the off-campus incident, a well-known molecular biologist and his family, including two small children, were forced to escape a smoke-filled house using a second-story ladder after a firebomb was intentionally set off, police said. One family member sustained injuries requiring brief hospitalization, and police are calling the firebombing, which occurred shortly before 6 a.m., a case of attempted homicide.

The arsons occurred four days after a customer at Caffe Pergolesi, a downtown Santa Cruz coffeehouse, found fliers listing the names, home addresses, home phone numbers and photos of 13 UC-Santa Cruz science researchers and professors. Police believe unidentified animal rights activists created the fliers, which were made to appear as "wanted posters."

They warned: "Animal abusers everywhere beware; we know where you live; we know where you work; we will never back down until you end your abuse." City and UC-Santa Cruz police contacted most of the people on the list to warn them.

Twelve hours later, firefighters were still trying to restore electricity to the house. The fire burned the front porch and melted the frame of the front door. Police said much of the home filled with smoke as a result of an incendiary device they would only describe as "significantly larger than a Molotov cocktail." A similar device was used to firebomb the car of a researcher. There were no injuries in that incident. Police refused to identify the owner of the car, but that person's name did not appear on the flier.

Santa Cruz police Capt. Steve Clark said Saturday's tandem events are the most serious in a string of events, including an attempted bombing of a Santa Cruz squad car in March 2007, that police believe are related to violent animal-liberation protesters.

'String of attacks'

In late February, six masked intruders broke into the home as the family celebrated a daughter's 8th birthday.

"The pattern and string of attacks has been escalating against the research and science community here as well as at other University of California campuses," Clark said.

Professors and researchers at the University of California-Berkeley and University of California-Los Angeles also have been targeted, including by firebombings in Los Angeles. More recently in Berkeley, nine hooded protesters showed up in front of a toxicology professor's off-campus home, scrawling "killer" in chalk on the doorstep and shattering the window of the home, and a window in a neighbor's home who scattered the protesters with a garden hose.

The Santa Cruz incidents occurred one day after a mass e-mailing by Stop Animal Exploitation Now!, or SAEN, highlighting what the group called "mounting violations of the animal welfare act" at private labs in Santa Cruz and Berkeley. Police would not say whether there is a connection between the group and Saturday's violence. Clark would only say authorities are looking at several animal liberation groups, including SAEN.

According to SAEN's executive director, Michael Budkie, who said he was in Ohio, the group researches and highlights public records regarding use of animals in research labs. He said the group does not use violent tactics and was not involved in the attacks Saturday in Santa Cruz.

Blame the police

This is exactly what happens when the police crack down on legal protests, people turn to other methods. I'm sure the police can expect incidents like this in the UK sometime soon...

I predict the

Animal Liberation Brigade were responsible for this one, just a guess of course...

Guidelines

"To take strategic direct action (be it non-violent or not) against the oppressive institutions that permeate the world.
Make every effort to minimize non-target casualties, be they human or non-human.
Respect a diversity of tactics, whether they be non-violent or not.
Any underground activist fighting for the liberation of the humyn, earth or animal nations may consider themselves a Revolutionary Cells volunteer."

Structure and aims

"The revolutionary cells exists as a front group for militants across the liberationary movement spectrum. We are anarchists, communists, anti-racists, animal liberationists, earth liberationists, luddites, feminists, queer liberationists, and many more things across various other fronts. Where ever there is oppression there are those unwilling to idly stand by and let it occur, and those people make up the nucleus of the revolutionary cells.
Who are the revolutionary cells? It is an anti-gmo activist destroying a gmo crop, it is a basque youth driving a car packed with explosives destined for a spanish politician, it is a queer bashing back, a rape victim putting a bullet in the rapist, a corsican nationalist planting a bomb at a french bank, it is a cincinatti riot in response to police brutality, an animal liberationist shooting a vivisector dead on his doorstep. In short it is the spirit of resistance realized. It is moving from politics to Praxis.

Anyone who takes part in the war against the oppressive hierarchies in this world can consider themselves a member of the Revolutionary Cells."

Molecular biologist, neuroscientist and vivisector David Feldheim, whose front door was charred, uses mice to study the development of brain functions involved in eyesight. Either David, or his wife, was treated in hospital after their lungs got a bit smokey and were released. They're keeping that one for us to guess who it was, as none of his family were seriously hurt in the arson. As for the other guy who had his car torched, he wasn't on the pamphlet, so he's keeping his details to himself.

Another UCSC vivisector in February this year got a punch in the face after trying to chase activists away who knocked on his door. They were trying to celebrate their girl's birthday, the militants on the other hand planned a home demo for the day.

Hours after that event, authorities raided a Riverside Avenue house where several students live. No arrests have been made, and police say the hard drive of a laptop confiscated at the house had been cleaned several times, increasing suspicion among investigators.

UCLA get fire bombs, UC-Berkeley get bricks.
Welcome to California. Vivisectors not welcome.

Home, Auto of UC Santa Cruz Vivisectors Set Ablaze

03.08.2008 23:15

Santa Cruz : The home of one UC Santa Cruz vivisector and the automobile of another were burned early Saturday, in what local authorities are calling attacks by animal liberationists. No communiques claiming the actions have yet been received by the North American Animal Liberation Press Office as of Sunday afternoon. According to a San Jose Mercury News reporter, the automobile of a vivisector whom police refused to name was completely destroyed, while the damage to the home of animal abuser David Feldheim was limited to a door frame and smoke damage. Feldheim is fond of terrorizing and killing mice in his research, which according to his website, involves the "viral introduction of genes into living mouse brains."

The attacks occurred four days after a customer at Caffe Pergolesi, a downtown Santa Cruz coffeehouse, found fliers listing the names, home addresses, home phone numbers and photos of thirteen UC-Santa Cruz vivisectors. Police believe unidentified animal rights activists created the fliers, which were made to appear as "wanted posters." The fliers warned: "Animal abusers everywhere beware; we know where you live; we know where you work; we will never back down until you end your abuse."

Santa Cruz police Captain Steve Clark would only say authorities are looking at several animal liberation groups, including SAEN, but have no suspects in Saturday's bombings.

"The pattern and string of attacks has been escalating against the research and science community here as well as at other University of California campuses," Clark said. Vivisectors at the University of California-Berkeley and University of California-Los Angeles also have been targeted, including firebombings in Los Angeles.

Animal Liberation Press Officer Jerry Vlasak, MD states: “UC Santa Cruz may consider themselves an institution of higher education, but they are also an institution of animal torture and killing. Their research is a colossal waste of taxpayer money, and is considered unethical and fraudulent by most physicians interested in research that might help their patients. These animals are terrified and abused beyond belief in these experiments, and this continued depravity by cruel wanna-be scientists simply cannot be justified any longer in a civilized society. This is historically what happens whenever revolutionaries begin to take the oppression and suffering of their fellow beings seriously , whether human or non human. It's regrettable that certain scientists are willing to put their families at risk by choosing to do wasteful animal experiments in this day and age."

Vivisector takes to crutches

04.08.2008 03:28

First time for everything...David Feldheim said he badly bruised his feet while getting out of his house and was taken to the hospital for X-rays. He said he didn't break any bones, but will have to walk with crutches for a few days until the swelling subsides.

He also realised that there's nothing that can protect him or his family from these attacks. I do hope for his sanity he makes the right choice and stops mutilating animals, instead of putting his family at risk just for extra cash.

I also hope that for every bit of pain felt as he walks, he recognises the pain he induces in animals on a daily basis. This scumbag was lucky, hopefully he won't be next time.

David is not only self-centered and greedy, but also completely stupid.

suprised

I'd like you of the animal rights liberator group to consider fighting against stem cell research. I am impressed by what I reckon your stance against science and science education to be. I think that you will help spread the word against science and against teaching evolution in the classroom. We know you are against abortion.
God Bless You and your strong moral beliefs. You are true liberators.
Sincerely,
Nancy Fulsom

Liberators are not anti-science, they are anti-vivisection and pro-science.
Liberators are not anti-abortionists, there is no evidence of this.

Pro-Choice is heavily associated with the animal rights movement. The believe that all individuals have the right to be free from pain, suffering and exploitation -- having the choice to be free from these evils -- is paramount to the movement and is a pro-choice ideology.

No right-wing christianity over here...
