Barclays Bank In Gravesend Picketed

For Bolshevism-AUCPB | 16.12.2009 09:32 | Smash EDO | Anti-militarism | Social Struggles

In support of SMASH EDO CAMPAIGN and against banks in general,
on Tuesday 15 December at around 4.15 in the afternoon, a picket was held outside Barclays bank in Gravesend, Kent as part of the Smash EDO Campaign of targeting Barclays banks over their investments in the arms industry.

Despite being a bit late in the day to hold a picket due to work commitments and only an hour before bank closing time, the response from the local people was good. People in Gravesend (like everywhere) are pissed off with banks in general and supported the picket. Smash EDO leaflets and leaflets of the London Coalition Against Poverty (LCAP) (unemployed workers' union) were handed out at the picket. Bank staff came out to see what was happening and were reminded of the role of banks, as parasites, thieves and usurers, that bank charges should be abolished, and that there should be an end to fat cat bonuses.

THE BANKS ARE SCUM!
BAILOUT THE PEOPLE NOT BANKS!
NO BANK BAILOUTS – DESTROY CAPITALISM!

Wrong place for your banner

Barclays never received a bailout from the Bank of England thus holding a banner outside of it saying no bailout for the banks is like protesting against Plamil with a banner saying no meat.

No bailout for the banks would have been more applicable against RBS, Lloyds, Halifax, and Northern Rock.

Incidentally if the banks had been left to go bust it would have been the working class that lost out, there are thousands of working class individuals who use RBS, Lloyds, etc, accounts with which to receive and store their wages. If the banks had gone bust not only would they have been left out of pocket for months until receiving compensation from the government, they'd have no access to cash in the mean time with further implications of home repossessions, defaulting on payments, etc thus aggravating the dire situation they already find themselves in.

Alleviating short term instability in the banks is necessary until such a point that capitalism can eventually be abolished. If you allow banks to collapse whilst capitalism still exists it is the working class who are going to be the ones cast out onto the streets from the fallout.

piss off. it was a justifiable use of the banner, didn't you read the bit "against banks in general".....that would include barclays, who have been stained with blood on their hands for decades...you turd. and when will people stop banging on about disrupting the "working class"? we're all pretty much working class, even people on dole have to work for it! the old "we'll free the workers" diatribes dont wash anymore. new millennium, new enemy, new social standings, new struggles and new plans. the working class rhetoric is fucking boring. "oh, dont destroy the banks coz we cant get our wages"

fuck you. destroy all the banks! get your wages from your BOSS, then kick your boss out and take over.

im a peasant, i dont even have a bank account. but get this, i still work and get paid cash, on the books, part time. so who's fighting my corner? me, thats who.

working class this working class that, its boring, 18th century marxist bollocks. it meant something then, nobody acted on it, and now its dated.

real world needs real change.......

so get real.

whether you agree with me or not - solidarity to those who oppose the banks.

@Banker: How about bailing out the working class instead?

16.12.2009 16:52

@Banker:

Maybe if the banks weren't incompetent and didn't piss all their money away up the wall with ludicrous salaries and bonuses they wouldn't have gone bust in the first place?

If working class people will suffer if the banks fails, how about the government let the banks collapse and bail out all the bank's customers directly instead?

A lot of bankers get paid more a year than most people do in a lifetime. And when they fuck up and lose everyone's money they just get bailed out instead of going bust like anyone else would.

fran your assumptions are noble but wrong

16.12.2009 17:31

Everyone's working class? Piss off with your middle class bull-shittery. 'We're all pretty much working class" is the silly justification used by middle class student turds who like to think they're oh so radical with their marches from point A to point B, but we all know that mummy and daddy slip them a crisp £50 on which to get razzled on a friday night.

I agree that the banks should be smashed and disagree with mr banker, but this notion that everyone is pretty much working class is wrong, tiresome, and merely middle class rhetoric masquerading as radical thought. The class system is alive and well. You just choose to ignore it. You cannot engage in radical change without challenging the foundations upon which corruption and exploitation are based. All victories are hollow otherwise, and victory here simply leads to the problem popping up again there.

actually,

im a peasent, like i said. so aren't i the bottom of the class system? no. because i work for a measly amount to get food each day. im not "middle class", if you mean a home owner, and i am not rich or even someone with any assets. so please dont offend me...........im poorer than most, im below the line, put it that way. but i fight on, not with class issues, but with issues of real justice.
them and us.
its that simple.

you're either on "our" side or "theirs".

so what is it to be?

everyone decides for themselves. i was JUST pointing out that as far as im concerned, the "class" talk gets nothing done. most "workers" support the system in which they are enslaved. some slaves even like it, it keeps them secure, their car and house, all secure. the police there to help them, the electric there to warm them and keep them plugged in.........some people, lots of workers, too, LIKE THE SYSTEM the way it is. so what do your "class" politics say to this?

nothing.
in my OPINION, communism is a fine example of using the workers for a political gain.Often then the "workers" are still used and chucked aside as and when the corporate leaders decide. where do the workers fit within the communist states now? still used and abused, no doubt.

look at Vestas. only real anarchism can free the "workers", and thats only the ones that want to be free, or even understand that they are a slave in the first place. but Vestas still are shits. whats to be done with class then? nothing, unless they act for themselves.

i could go on, but i cant be arsed. forget the class shit, lets crumble their "system", take control of the means of resources and production, empower people to act like wise and hey, presto, everyones a winner!

but the likely hood of that happening with out a FUCKING BIG BATTLE FIRST, is really slim potential.

the system will not change or go silently.................it must crumble first. in my OPINION.

fran, a peasent

your comment is crap....you talk about workers losing out without a bailout.....the working people lose out anyway under this rotten capitalist system, plus not forgetting the few thousand Barclays employees layed off in the meantime towards raising the 6.5 billion to rescue itself.....

banks = usurers+parasites
no to fat cat bonuses
abolish bank charges
smash the capitalist system - banks as well
