Italy: Demos, blockades and riots everywhere today

MR | 14.12.2010 19:25 | Repression | Social Struggles | Workers' Movements

Today was the 2nd vote of No Confidence in the Berlusconi government. He survived by two votes. Across Italy, students, school kids and workers took the the streets to protest Berlusconi but also against the continuing neo-liberal education reforms. In Rome there were major clashes that saw the most heavy rioting seen in Italy since Genova in 2001. As well as this, economic blockades and occupations were put in place at many train stations, the port of Palermo and even on the runway of an airport in Sicily.

Striking transport workers occupy four out of Athens’ seven bus depots to continue the strike
Tuesday, December 14, 2010

This week has already seen an unprecedented wave of strikes planned by transport workers, with so called “work halts” (half day strikes) called for most days of the week and a strike called for the 15th, of course – the day of the General Strike.

However, workers at the city’s buses decided to take things further today when they occupied four of Athens’ seven “Thermal Buses depots” (ETHEL). ETHEL has the largest fleet among the buses in the city and as a result, most bus routes are not operating today.

High school student call for Wednesday’s General Strike
Tuesday, December 14, 2010

It would be impossible to gather and translate all the call-outs for the General Strike demonstration of December 15th in Athens – there are far too many. As an indication of the spirits in the city, however, we are posting a translation of the text issued by the collective “High School Students with Memory”, which is very revealing.

DECEMBER 15TH: EVERYONE TO THE STREETS

The state is throwing us to the streets, and so, they’ll find us on the streets. We see for all this time our parents, one by one, thrown out to the street and we don’t say a word. We see wages lowered and fear that when we come to work there will be no wages at all and that we’ll be slaves (not that it is that different today).

NO CONSENSUS – NO TOLERANCE

…o the anti-social plans of global sovereignty, of the state and the bosses who push for the total, violent restructuring of society, the destruction and looting of nature, aiming for exploitation, repression and control, sentencing the many to impoverishment.

RESISTANCE

To the constant intensification of exploitation in workplaces and to the blackmail of unemployment.

Forward to social revolution. Your days of plenty are numbered. We call our our fellow classmates and the university students to occupy their schools and take to the streets. Our rage is HUGE. Now, more than ever, whoever does not take a share in the struggle will have a share in defeat.

EVERYONE TO THE CLASS DEMONSTRATION IN ATHENS, THESSALONIKI AND ALL OTHER CITIES

THESSALONIKI: KAMARA, 9 AM

ATHENS: ARCHEOLOGICAL MUSEUM, 11 AM

EVERYONE TO THE STREETS ON WEDNESDAY AND EVERY DAY! AGAINST ALL AUTHORITY! LONG LIVE THE REVOLUTION, LONG LIVE ANARCHY!

Third day of rioting in Keratea, Attica against waste burial site construction sees riot police van and policeman set alight; court orders temporary halt to the works; Greece counts hours to its seventh General Strike in 2010
Tuesday, December 14, 2010

Fierce battles between riot police and locals resisting the construction of a waste burial site have continued for a third consecutive day in the area of Keratea, Attica (around 10 miles south of Athens International Airport). This morning, a court ordered a temporary halt to the works. A small victory, which could however very easily be a smokescreen to calm down the insurgent locals and to allow the police to concentrate on the General Strike in central Athens on Wednesday.

At least six people in struggle were arrested by police in Keratea, of which one has been injured and is in hospital.

2,000 locals attack riot police with molotovs, sticks, stones and gun shots in Keratea, Attica; Athens gears up for long week of anti-cuts mobilisations and General Strike

Monday, December 13, 2010

In the past two days, local residents of the area of Keratea in Attica (Greater Athens) have been engaged in a fierce battle with riot police (MAT). The riot police are there to protect the construction of a waste burial site (HITA). Such burial sites have not only been judged to be illegal by European courts but additionally, the site in Keratea is of archeological significance.

On Saturday, riot police arrived at the site to protect the ongoing construction works from the enraged locals. Clashes quickly erupted, with locals attacking the police with sticks, stones and scores of molotov cocktails. The police responded with tear gas while for the first time ever in Greece, water cannons also made their appearance. On Sunday evening, gunshots were aimed in the direction of the police from nearby hills.

At the same time, Athens is gearing up for what seems to be the largest general strike in a while. Tomorrow, the discussion over the new labour law will be commence in parliament. The law, expected to be voted in by Tuesday, will override the collective working sector agreements and allow bosses to set individual contracts instead. The law will also waive the number of workers that bosses are allowed to fire, along with the compensation that they must pay them. Corporate newspapers have dubbed this a “Taiwan model” for Greece.

The General Strike, called for Wednesday 15.12, is expected to be one of the largest the country has seen in a while. Workers in Public Transport will be on strike for the best part of the week; transportation will be available before and after the strike demonstration on Wednesday however, to facilitate people’s participation to the demo.
