The dreams of a community cut short by corporate greed.

The camera never lies, so the saying goes, well, even though it is not strictly 'news', I thought I should publish for you the truth of something as it is now, so here are some pictures of what is left of Mill Road Social Centre after the Tescos bailiffs have had their wicked way.

Tesco Mill Road shop rejected again

Last night the council met to consider Tesco's planning application for their proposed Mill Road store. The meeting was packed, and while most councillors abstained, none voted for it, leaving the votes of the new Green councillor and one Lib Dem to reject the proposal on grounds including noise and traffic. Tesco proceeded to evict the Mill Road Social Centre who had squatted the site, despite saying they could stay until work could begin.

Fast for justice in India

I want to alert folk in the UK to a couple of campaigns that are happening right now. Both relate to India and both are of particular interest in that they are using the technique of fasting as a way of drawing attention to the struggle. I have pledged to support the first campaign by participating in the fast; others may be interested in how they can offer their support.

Mill Road Social Centre's days are numbered.

This morning at approximately 10:30am in room 2 of East Road Court, a judge presiding over the case of a repossession order for the premises currently occupied by the Mill Road Social Centre granted possession to Tescos, meaning that the current occupants will have to vacate the premises some time in the near future, thereby soon ending an era of community occupation of the old Wilco store premises.

What a load of rubbish

Big dump! This story doesn't have too much to do with the UK. Except that, as the Buddha would say, we're all fundamentally interconnected. Or, to put it another way, one woman's waste is another woman's garden furniture.

And maybe the pics will help to stoke the fire in your belly...

Agent Orange

Last night I attended a screening of the film "The Last Ghost of War" at IIT Chennai, India, followed by a discussion with Dr Simone Nhu-Mai of the Vietnam Agent Orange Victims Association (VAVA). The film and discussion highlighted the horrific legacy that continues to be felt in Vietnam (in addition to Laos and Cambodia, as well as among war veterans from the US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Korea) due to the spraying of herbicides, including the defoliant Agent Orange.

In defence of the diverse: Mill road residents take to the streets.

On Saturday November 24th, 2007, the people of Mill Road, Cambridge united upon the tarmac of the very street they treasure so much in it's current form, and sent out a resolute message of defiance against the ongoing corporate project by the likes of Tesco, who, if they could, would have us believe that there is only their way of doing things.
