Will Manchester United Celebrate Israel at 60?

The Israeli government has invited Manchester United to play a match during the state’s 60th anniversary celebrations. Ron Prosor, Israel's UK ambassador, seems to be trying to “improve Israels image” by associating the country with a hugely successful brand. I fail to see what good it will do Man Utd to be associated with the worlds worst brand, especially at a time of year when Israel is celebrating their independence at the expense of the Palestinians who were ethnically cleansed. RECENT EVENTS

Manchester NO2ID has very busy since our November meeting. As well as our regular street stall, we've flyered the Lord Mayor of Manchester [1] at the Central Library, held an emergency street stall [2] in the light of the HMRC data leak, and reached the Information Commissioner himself [3] at an ICO conference in Manchester.

These are all great actions, and thanks to everyone who's shown up and helped out; we've been getting our points across to an increasingly sympathetic public, and also to people in positions of power, reminding them that we exist and cannot be ignored.

Tesco(poly) comes to Mottram

Tesco have been invited to build a store in Mottram, near Hattersley, part of Tameside. The local authority and the Highways Agency (HA) have asked them to delay planning permission until after Easter 2008, a time period which exactly matches that for a delay requested by the HA into the Public Inquiry for the Longdendale Bypass. Nimco Mahamed Shire Detained at Yarlswood needs your support!!

On Friday 14th December 2007 Nimco Mahamed Shire was attacked and wronlgy accused of assault by a house mate. She was arrested by Greater Manchester Police and taken to Longsight Police Station. She was then taken to a holding centre at Manchester Airport before being moved to the infamous Yarlswood detention centre

Liverpool Vigil To Support Freedom Of Protest

There is a candlelit demo on Saturday 22nd at Cricket, Mathew Street 1-3pm in support of animal welfare and human rights/civil liberties, in particular to support a fellow activist from Bolton who was recently found guilty of section 5 for photographing police officers for evidence gathering purposes during an incident at Cricket and fined £500. What happened to me this week only further strengthens the need for as many people as possible to attend and stand up against the oppressive behaviour of the police who seem hellbent on stifling legal protest. I really feel that this campaign is becoming as much about defending what little right to protest we are still 'allowed' as much as Cricket selling fur.
