Nottingham against detention centres & deportations - Harmondsworth, Heathrow

12-02-2007 11:44 | Migration | Repression | Terror War | Nottinghamshire

Banner Collage
Nottingham contigent numbered 8 out of a 150-strong Feb 10th demo outside privately run detention centres at Heathrow, too big for the small pen cops wanted us in. See photos of a Serco/Sodexho screw (they turned up in pairs shortly before visiting time - cops stopping visitors entering until we'd gone. Police 'intelligence gathering' as well. We also manage to make contact with inmate(s).

Plane Stupid Newsletter #6

24-12-2006 17:41 | Climate Chaos | Repression | Social Struggles | London | Nottinghamshire

“This is a deeply traumatized community which has been lied to for years and years by the aviation industry and one political party after another. There is a litany of broken promises. I wonder just how you might feel if you had endured all this for years! I am so angry I am almost incandescent with rage at the immorality of it all.”
- A resident of Harmondsworth, near Heathrow

Beatings and Sugar Plums: New Labour's War on the Kurds

02-11-2006 17:17 | Analysis | Anti-racism | Migration | Repression | Leeds Bradford | Manchester | Nottinghamshire | Sheffield | World

Early morning on September 5th security guards burst into the sleeping quarters of Colnbrook detention centre in west London. The guards had come to take thirty two Iraqi Kurdish men away. Barefoot, handcuffed, with the guards swearing at them, the thirty two were taken to RAF Brize Norton. Their threatened forced deportation to Arbil in northern Iraq was imminent. In response, one man slit his throat and up to fourteen others took overdoses or cut themselves in a desperate attempt to avoid "removal". One eye witness described the scene at the holding area at the airport as "carnage with blood on the walls".(1) The Kurds knew the danger of returning to Iraq. They had fled the country years before because of that danger.

Nottingham response to the killing of Indymedia volunteer Brad Will in Mexico

29-10-2006 12:57 | Indymedia | Repression | Zapatista | Nottinghamshire

I am writing this article to start working on a response from Nottingham to the brutal killing of Indymedia volunteer Brad Will, while filming at a demonstration in Oaxaca, Mexico on Friday. While Brad worked with New York Indymedia, these issues effect us all and solidarity actions have already taken place in New York, San Fransisco, Chile, Brasil, Canada, and have been planned to happen all over. What could Nottinghams response be? Some people from the Oaxaca region came to speak in Nottingham nearly 2 years ago when their situation grew from bad to worse. Now the situation is one of state assassins, violence and continues repression. What shall we do?

A glimpse of national ID card enforcement

19-10-2006 15:01 | Education | Repression | Technology | London | Nottinghamshire

University of Westminster shows the way in ID card enforcement! This university's marketing slogan is most revealing - "educating for a professional life", they say. With a basic principle of compulsory carrying of cards, a 'three strikes' policy to deny you entry to premises & services if you forget your card, and making it a disciplinary offence if you refuse to show one, this kind of education will most certainly be invaluable for future life if the government gets away with introducing its national ID policy.
