Hilton delegates shocked by 5 metre high aviation elephant

17-06-2008 13:29 | Climate Chaos | Ecology | Education | World

The aviation elephant in the room
A 5 metre high Giant Inflatable Elephant shocked delegates at the Edinburgh Caledonian Hilton today with a massive banner stating ’Aviation is the Elephant in the Room.’

This spectacle, created by anti-aviation group Plane Stupid Scotland, is a huge visual reminder that aviation remains a massive elephant in the room as long as emissions from aviation continue to be ignored in the Climate Change Bill.

Let's shout about the price of oil

10-06-2008 12:35 | Analysis | Climate Chaos | Globalisation | World

Should we be complaining about increases in fuel prices or welcoming them as a help in addressing climate change and peak oil? This article suggests we should be shouting, not just for cuts in prices, but for responsible management of the world's resources. It is in our own self interest to do so.

Campaign to raise awareness of 350ppm C02 target

06-06-2008 22:24 | Climate Chaos | Ecology | Sheffield | World

350.org Postcard Campaign
The implications of James Hansen and co's paper, Target CO2: Where should humanity aim?  http://arxiv.org/abs/0804.1126 and it's supporting documentation,  http://arxiv.org/abs/0804.1135 are probably not yet well known, though it did make the front page of The Guardian,  http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2008/apr/07/climatechange.carbonemissions

A campaign has now been launched to raise awareness of this target -- currently we have over 380ppm of CO2 and it's going up faster than ever before --  http://www.350.org/

Fuelling the Fire

Rising oil prices offer the best hope of curbing carbon emissions in the short term, but they also reflect our unquenchable thirst for the black gold. Just don’t mention the ‘R’ word…

The Tools Of Greenwashing: Astroturfs

27-05-2008 10:26 | Analysis | Climate Chaos | Globalisation | London | World

Questioning and exposing the greenwashing activities of corporations, in particular, is something that the seasoned cynic makes light of; but sometimes our job is made more difficult, not so much by the quality of the greenwashing being used, but by the sheer weight of apparent “public” opinion supporting the views of the corporations.

Saying Goodbye to Air Travel

16-05-2008 21:00 | Analysis | Climate Chaos | Globalisation | Sheffield | World

The airline industry has no future. The same is true for airfreight. No air carrier has a viable plan to make a profit with oil at current prices—much less in years to come as the petroleum available to world markets dwindles rapidly.

Homeland Security in Bangkok Launches Cyberwar Against Dissidents

11-05-2008 16:03 | Climate Chaos | Repression | Technology | World

In spite of the boom and bust cycle of shrimp farming, Thailand has continued to maintain relative calm in the eye of a storm called "Indochina". Just across the "Friendship Bridge" lies the Empire of Halliburton and Unocal (chevron), where the threat of genocide has loomed for decades, and tentacles spread through Thailand where information warfare was launched on New Years Day, 2007. It has reached a new level today.

Green Taxes: A Hard Lesson For Environmental Lightweights

02-05-2008 10:15 | Climate Chaos | Ecology | Globalisation | World

So, as I suspected all along; according to an article in todays Independent, the public don’t support “green” taxes.

"More than seven in 10 voters insist that they would not be willing to pay higher taxes in order to fund projects to combat climate change, according to a new poll. "

US Media's Left Wing 'Agenda' and the Public's Knowledge of Climate Science

29-04-2008 06:32 | Climate Chaos | Ecology | World

You've heard it many times.

--The 'left wing' U.S. media is 'scare-mongering and alarmist' about climate change. They are frightening the people of the U.S. about the affects of global warming without having enough facts and research to back up their statements. --

The statements from researchers 'on the ground' ARE very alarming, no one can dispute that. Here are a few of the past year or so from separate, independent, long-term scientific studies. [Links to the report that these statements are ripped from are provided below.]

Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil: Snake Oil!

28-04-2008 10:59 | Analysis | Climate Chaos | Ecology | World

Ever get the feeling you’ve been had? It’s an iconic quote from a punk legend, but as with all great sayings, it can be applied in many different places. This is one example: the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, an industry talking shop if ever there was one and, like the ineffectual light-green environmental groups who “fight” for changes to government policy and send out gleeful press releases whenever a corporation promises to behave itself, the RSPO are actually making things far worse than if the public were left to their own devices.

Grangemouth Workers Strike

27-04-2008 21:50 | Climate Chaos | Workers' Movements | World

Unite members at a Grangemouth meeting
Today sees the start of a 48 hour strike by workers at the Ineos oil refinery in Grangemouth, Central Scotland. Members of the Unite Union have staged the walk out in response to the companies discontinuation of their pension scheme, leaving workers with an uncertain future. Grangemouth produces %10 of the UK’s petrol and diesel. The strike will also cause the shutting of the Forties pipe-line, which supplies much of the UK’s fossil-fuels, including the fifth of Britain’s gas.
