Climate Action: Too Important for the Politicians

07-02-2009 15:45 | COP15 Climate Summit 2009 | Analysis | Climate Chaos | Energy Crisis | World

On 23rd January I went to a climate question time at Leeds Civic Hall organised by Oxfam as part of their role in the Stop Climate Chaos coalition. The panel was pretty high level;

Hilary Benn, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
Robert Goodwill, Shadow Roads Minister for Transport
Richard Brett, Liberal Democrat and Co-Leader of Leeds City Council
Martin Kirk, Oxfam’s Head of Campaigns

It’s usual in these things for there to be a load of party point scoring – including generous helpings of logical and factual errors – but the balance is somewhat redressed by points from the audience.

as aviation minister, I learned two lessons about the aviation industry. First, its demands are insatiable; secondly, successive Governments have always given way to them.

Third runway to cure cancer and end world poverty

07-02-2009 13:13 | Analysis | Climate Chaos | Ecology | South Coast | World

Is there anything a third runway at Heathrow wouldn't do? Not according to its promoters in the aviation industry. The recent snowfall that crippled most of our airports shut Heathrow after a plane skidded onto the icy grass. Some 18-30s club rep from the Association of British Travel Agents thought they'd whack out a press release claiming that it could all have been avoided with a third runway.

Manchester airport: emissions cleared for take-off

05-02-2009 19:26 | Climate Chaos | Ecology | Technology | World

Manchester City Council announced their 'Call to Action' on climate change last month, which plans to reduce the City's emissions by one third by 2020. Great! we thought: the Council owns 55% of Manchester Airport Group (MAG), so surely this 'Call to Action' would see the Airport's emissions reduce as well? Alas no: the Council simply washed their hands of this issue.

Support for taxes on flights keeps growing

It finally seems like we might just be getting through to people - maybe even the hard-working British families the aviation industry likes to blame for their plans to turn Britain into Airstrip One.

Revealed: the truth behind Tory support for South-East airport expansion

05-02-2009 07:59 | Climate Chaos | Ecology | Energy Crisis | South Coast | World

Last week Tory Transport supremo Theresa Villiers admitted in the third runway debate that a Conservative government would not rule out airport expansion in the South-East. This rightly confused many people: if there is no case for expanding Heathrow or Stansted, then where do the Tories want to expand? And why, if they are persuaded that climate change = bad, do they want to expand any at all?

Trump;s golf course fuels airport expansion

05-02-2009 07:58 | Climate Chaos | Ecology | Social Struggles | South Coast | World

Donald Trump, the American tycoon behind the theme-park golf course set to trash the beautiful Ayrshire coast, has been linked to plans to expand Aberdeen airport. Not content with making a mockery of the Scottish government by ignoring local decision makers (not to mention 9 of the holes being built on a Site of Special Scientific Interest)

Greenpeace Lose The Plot

29-01-2009 12:51 | Climate Chaos | Free Spaces | South Coast | World

I’ll admit it, I signed up to the Greenpeace “Airplot” scheme, putting my name down to be a joint owner of a piece of land adjacent to London Heathrow Airport which would have to be compulsorily purchased should the airport be expanded. What happened next really freaked me out.
