The Sick Man of Little Asia and the Nazi Occupiers

14-06-2013 15:14 | Occupy Everywhere | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Iraq | World

The civil war in Turkey has several origins. On its Asian side there is so much ongoing conflict that it has become ever more attractive for the successor state of history's longest lasting empire to indulge itself in a technocratic hallucination of fictional sovereignty. Plans for the regulation of river flows into Iraq exploit the total dependency created by such measures to maintain illusions of power and influence that cannot be found for real in the international role of the country. On its European side there is an absurd stalemate and permanent haggling whether Germany is going to allow its ailing WWI ally into the equally rotten conglomerate of the EU or not. The term „privileged partnership“ has become a joke in itself, with ever more unreasonable demands made as an entry price, up to the grotesque scenery of a German military presence being established last winter for no other purpose than humiliating Erdogan. And now, the bizarre rhetoric emanating from the regime indicates that it has lost control of the escalation it ignited with its mindless attacks against protesters.

Boston/Iraq bombings.

15-04-2013 22:27 | Iraq | Other Press | Terror War | World

White blood, excellent quality, best price.
The US reporting by the BBC is wall to wall, live and full to brimming with close up shots of injuries, endless shots of the injured accompanied with numerous interviews with security consultants keen to engineer the terrorist agenda. The same is true of Sky, RT, al-Jazeera and print and other TV media. There is no coverage at all of the situation in Iraq bar a few lazy, innacurate and badly written print reports on a few newspaper websites.

Iraq: Was it Worth It?...Are You Kidding?

15-02-2013 15:56 | Afghanistan | Iraq | Terror War | London | World

Today marks the ten year anniversary of the day over a million people marched against attacking Iraq. The papers are full of ‘Iraq: Was it Worth It?’ articles. To those of us implacably opposed to this attack, such a question is as ludicrous as asking ‘The Holocaust: Was it Worth it?’ The bogus War on Terror and the neoliberal principle of intervention for profit under the guise of extending democracy has made the world a more dangerous place. Pursuing this ideology in the face of mass opposition has made the world a less democratic place.

'Sworn Enemies'? A Response To George Monbiot from Media Lens

07-11-2012 11:04 | Analysis | Iraq | Other Press | Sheffield | World

Hi George

It's good to know that your email is intended in a 'friendly and constructive spirit'. We hope you will post a link to this response on your home page and via Twitter.

You write that Media Lens is a 'project whose purpose is to engage and persuade progressive journalists by critiquing their work and encouraging people to write to them'.

We do, of course, encourage readers to send polite emails to journalists. But our primary purpose is to raise public awareness by highlighting examples of corporate media bias. What people do with that awareness is really up to them. Our hope is that it feeds into activism, campaigning and the creation of non-corporate media like MediaBite, News Unspun and BS News.

Above all, we're trying to stimulate debate and participation. Engaging with journalists is certainly part of that, but we have few illusions about influencing media employees who often have little room for manoeuvre and who are deeply dependent on the corporate system. We do hope for marginal improvements as a direct result of our work - they do happen and do matter - but it's not a primary concern.
