Bad apples vs social change: policing after the G20 protests

12-08-2009 15:01

Since the G20 protest in London this year the policing methods used over April 1st and 2nd have been dissected and discussed regularly in the media and in parliament. Reports have been produced and protests condemning police violence have been organised. Thousands of words have been published both in mainstream and independent media sources discussing civil liberties and issues around the right to protest. But has anything actually changed?

IPCC calls for immediate change in policing tactics: G20 pdf Bishopgate Report

06-08-2009 13:10

Lots of coverage appearing online and on tv news of the latest IPCC report into G20 policing, this one in relation to police tactics in dealing with the Climate Camp on Bishopgate and the specific experiences of one woman mostly at the hands of TSG.

The report is available here:
 http://www.ipcc.gov.uk/Bishopsgate_Report.pdf
and reprinted below for information purposes.

HMIC has made three immediate recommendations:

- No surprises – Protestors and public should be made aware of
likely police action in order to make informed decisions.

- A release plan to allow vulnerable or distressed persons or those
inadvertently caught up in the police containment to exit.

- A review of current public order training.

How Independent is the Independent Police Complaints Commission?

05-08-2009 22:51

Public confidence in the police took a knock after the death of Ian Tomlinson at the G20 protests in April. As videos of police violence spread like wildfire on YouTube, their actions were roundly condemned by politicians and the media. Things have died down for the moment. With the MPs’ expenses scandal and Westminster going into meltdown police chiefs must have been quietly relieved when the public’s attention shifted elsewhere. Investigations into police misconduct continue at the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC). But what exactly does the IPCC do? Is it effective? And who does it serve?

Protest Mediators: A Plan To Make Protest Even More Benign

03-08-2009 07:49

What is the point of protest?

To create change. I would have thought that was obvious; it is the only rational response to the question. So why has so little change happened as a result of protest in the Western world in the last 30 years?

What's body fascism doing in a nice riot like this?

27-06-2009 23:02

Imagine the following scenario: a reporter from a mainstream magazine goes to a Climate Camp event, and asks for someone to do an interview with. The media team sends a camper to do the interview, and this camper happens to be Asian, or black. The reporter says: "Sorry, our readers prefer to look at pictures of white people. Do you have anyone white we could interview?" How would the Climate Campers react? Hopefully they would tell this reporter to fuck the hell off, at the very least.
