To mark the opening of the Centre for the Study of Social and Global Justice at Nottingham University we are hosting a lecture by one of the best known critical intellectuals in the world: Distinguished Professor David Harvey who will speak on 'Social Justice and the City'.

Early morning on September 5th security guards burst into the sleeping quarters of Colnbrook detention centre in west London. The guards had come to take thirty two Iraqi Kurdish men away. Barefoot, handcuffed, with the guards swearing at them, the thirty two were taken to RAF Brize Norton. Their threatened forced deportation to Arbil in northern Iraq was imminent. In response, one man slit his throat and up to fourteen others took overdoses or cut themselves in a desperate attempt to avoid "removal". One eye witness described the scene at the holding area at the airport as "carnage with blood on the walls".(1) The Kurds knew the danger of returning to Iraq. They had fled the country years before because of that danger.

I get really pissed of when on the one hand as individual I am told recycle recycle and switch off my lights and don't have baths (blah blah like I need telling........) whilst at the same time corporations are left alone to light and heat corporate building 24/7, water companies make massive profits for shareholders while water pours out of unrepaired mains pipes and manufacturers of stuff, supermarkets and fast food chains produce mountains of unnecessary packaging loads of which cannot be recycled and is destined for landfill or incineration. We pay for the privilege of having a recycling collection service (if we are lucky) or we pay the financial, health and environmental costs of it all being chucked into and landfill or incineration. All to get rid of rubbish we don't need or want in the first place. Now that doesn't seem right.

In a move which the more cynical might think was consciously timed to follow and support Blairs nuclear inspired visit to Nottingham yesterday, one of the countries biggest unions today warned that the country faced black-outs and job losses if urgent action isn't taken to address the coming energy crisis. However, rather than demand immediate investiment in renewable energy, they say Britain must build more nuclear power station... just what Blair want too.

On his whistle stop visit to Nottingham today, Blair is moving forward in paving the way for new nuclear power station in the UK. He is acutely aware that the UK is in a dire position with it's coal industry dismantled and it's north sea oil and gas reserves in decline having been exported for a quick buck around the world. Now, the choice is to either invest big time in tried and tested renewables such as wind and solar, along with developing tidal and energy conservation technologies... or just bung up another few dozen nuclear power stations and leave the problems to future generations.

Meanwhile, Iran is seeking to establish it's own nuclear power plants and Blair is joining Bush in nashing their teeth and threatening some kind of action to stop them obtaining the technology.

Blair would like us to think it's about stopping Iran getting the technology that could led them to obtain nuclear weapons. Perhaps that is Irans goal, although today the Irans president yesterday stated that they don't need nuclear weapons, he said only countries that see force as an answer to any problem require such weapons, I wonder who he might be talking about...
