Summer 2012 antimilitarist actions

Smash EDO | 27.04.2012 20:16 | Smash EDO | Afghanistan | Anti-militarism | Iraq | Palestine | London | South Coast | World

The UK antimilitarist movement is building fresh coalitions against new developments in state militarism. In March activists converged in Bristol to confront an unmanned drones conference and a ‘Disarm the National Gallery’ campaign was launched in London to end arms trade sponsorship of the gallery. This week delegates visiting the annual Counter-Terror conference were met by a counter-protest and Vince Cable's speech at the UKTI conference was disrupted.

Smash EDO, who have campaigned to shut EDO MBM down for eight years are launching three months of action, from May 1st to August 1st, next week with a mayday noise demonstration, a bad music demonstration and a phone and twitter blockade to name just a few of the planned events.

And in Scotland, Faslane peace camp are calling for 30 days of action against Faslane nuclear base.

The UK antimilitarist movement reached its height in terms of boots on the streets in 2003 with the outpouring of public rage against the Iraq war. However, that resistance proved ineffectual due to the focus on A-B marches. Since then, groups have come together to forge a more militant movement with direct action at its core. This movement focused on targeting those who made profit out of war.

That movement reached a high in 2008 and 2009 with successful mobilisations against EDO MBM in Brighton(1, 2, 3) the DSEi arms fair in docklands and against those profiting from Israel's attacks on Gaza.

The all-out attack by the Coalition on ordinary people's livelihoods has meant that many turned their attention away from anti-militarist campaigns to focus on opposing the state's austerity measures. However, overseas repression has continued apace, with UK troops and aerial bombardment in Afghanistan continuing. Drone technology has changed the face of warfare and allowed attacks to be carried out without the need for troops on the ground or for the declaration of a state of war. The CIA has recently launched drone attacks in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia. Meanwhile, in the UK, civil society becomes increasingly securitised as military technology, tested in the battlegrounds of the War on Terror, is used to control borders and police demonstrations. The threat of war with Iran is ever present and our resistance needs to become a tangible threat to state militarism.

UPDATED SCHEDULE FOR BATH DRONES CONFERENCE PROTESTS

27.05.2012 13:24

Just to let people know about the updoming drones conference in Bath, and plans to stop it:

"RESIST THE DRONES FAIR - NO DRONES IN BATH - ORGANISING MEETING - SATURDAY 2nd JUNE - Manvers street Baptist church (1 minute walk from Bath Spa train station) – 11AM-4.00PM

Dear anti-militarist

As you may have seen, a large military fair - focusing on military and surveillance drones - is being held in Bath between the 25th and 28th of June. We intend to resist them, and want to bring together the biggest coalition of groups and individuals to educate, agitate, organise and make sure the death dealers' stay in Bath isn't a pleasant one!

As we speak, groups and individuals in Bath, including the local Stop the War Coalition are doing sterling work petitioning the council to scrap the conference (as it is being held in council-owned buildings). We hope that this tactic will encourage the council to see sense, but in case the fair does go ahead, we need to start organising ASAP to build the biggest and most effective response.

In an effort to make sure that resisting the drone conference is a process that includes as many different voices, groups and perspectives as possible, we are holding a planning day, where all groups and individuals opposed to the conference can kick-start the process of organising resistance/events. We would love it if you, and as many of your mates/representatives from your group as possible could make it along.

As you will probably know, drones are unmanned aerial weapons which have been indiscriminately terrorising, killing and maiming hundreds of civilians in countries including Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The structure of the day is completely open, so if you have any amendments or suggestions, please drop us an email. At this point, we imagine the day will break down a bit like this -

MORNING SESSION – 11-12.30

*Introduction to the conference - who are the baddies/where and when will they be meeting?
*Feedback on progress so far - finding out the progress of petitions to the council etc
*Feedback from anti-drone conference protests in Bristol - what worked, what didn't?
*Events - coming up with ideas for protests/events and a timetable
*Any other ideas/ things that need to be discussed or have not been covered
*'To do list'
*people form working groups to complete tasks on the to do list

LUNCH - 12.30 - 1.15

AFTERNOON SESSION - 1.15 - 3.45

*Split into working groups
*Feedback from working groups and discussion of next steps

We hope you can make it along, and tell as many people as possible.

Cheers
Bath Stop the Drones

p.s. People of BANES can join the call to cancel this conference by signing the e-petition
