Climate change So what legacy will we leave behind?

08-02-2009 16:43 | Analysis | Climate Chaos | Technology | World

I wrote the following article and I would like to have it get a little more exposure than just a letter to the editor in the local newspaper. The problem with the global warming theory is that it can cloud one's vision from a real threat, global cooling. And in so doing can cause great harm to this country.

Another Study Exposes Bio-Fuel Scam - Corn Dog Update

08-02-2009 15:20 | Ecology | Energy Crisis | Technology | World

A couple days ago, I published a piece listing 14 studies that have exposed the high costs of the ethanol scam. But I overlooked two points: A new study by Cornell University’s David Pimentel, and the latest numbers showing the amount of corn ethanol distilling capacity that has been idled due to negative margins.

A man who died in prison while serving time for a rape he didn't commit was cleared Friday by a judge who called the state's first posthumous DNA exoneration "the saddest case" he'd ever seen. . . .

Manchester airport: emissions cleared for take-off

05-02-2009 19:26 | Climate Chaos | Ecology | Technology | World

Manchester City Council announced their 'Call to Action' on climate change last month, which plans to reduce the City's emissions by one third by 2020. Great! we thought: the Council owns 55% of Manchester Airport Group (MAG), so surely this 'Call to Action' would see the Airport's emissions reduce as well? Alas no: the Council simply washed their hands of this issue.

Internet hosting prosecuted in Italy

05-02-2009 16:29 | Indymedia Server Seizure | Indymedia | Other Press | Technology | World

In the light of the excuses given for the recent Indymedia server seizer in Manchester, this story is highly relevant. In Italy, a rather disturbing prosecution is taking place. Google officials, including Chief Privacy Counsel Peter Fleischer, are being criminally prosecuted for a video somebody else uploaded to YouTube.

Gggollum Sues Tolkien for Cyber Libel

05-02-2009 12:33 | Indymedia Server Seizure | Other Press | Technology | South Coast | World

Sir David Eady, possibly the most famous high court judge in the UK, was brought in to rule on the case of Christopher Carrie, who claims he was abused as a child by John Tolkien, a priest and scoutmaster, and son of the Lord of the Rings author. Mr Carrie was trying to sue Royd Tolkien, one of the writer’s great-grandsons and a bit-part actor in one of the massively successful Lord of the Rings films, over comments made on a website. The fact that Mr Carrie was behind the website only came out in the build-up to the court case. He had previously posted entries on the website under the name ``gggollum''.

This article gives an update on preparations for the widely anticipated "Social Forum Science and Democracy", and raises questions for social movements to discuss. For example, the circulation and discussion of this important movement question: "Is elite control of science and technology a strategic bolt in the global machinery of Empire that we need to unscrew?"

Indymedia refuses to be co-opted by the Knight Foundation

30-11-2008 19:35 | Indymedia | Technology | World

A $200,000 grant proposal, submitted by a group of Indymedia volunteers to the Knight News Challenge contest, has been blocked by other IMCs and subsequently dropped due to the abiding ethos that Indymedia is a counter to corporate, money-fiaxted media entities. The grant application to the Knight Foundation was to fund technical development work for Independent Media Centres (IMCs), also known as Indymedia, and has caused much controversy within the global network. The debate has encapsulated, once again, the thorny issue of how to sustain radical projects without compromising that radicalism by accepting tainted money.
