NATO's Secret Transatlantic Bond: Nuclear Weapons In Europe

04-12-2009 16:31 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Technology | World

US nuclear weapons in Europe 2008
Not only are the warheads stationed in NATO nations but are explicitly there as part of a sixty-year policy of the Alliance, in fact a major cornerstone of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

The basing of nuclear warheads on the territory of non-nuclear nations - and Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey are non-nuclear nations - is a gross violation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

'Moodle', 'Sloodle' and virtual worlds in classrooms, limited parental access.

03-12-2009 23:48 | Culture | Education | Technology | World

If you ask for your child to bring home his exercise books you will likely be told that according to 'guidelines' this is not permitted. However, your local school may suggest that you go to the school to see your child's work, where a teacher will explain what is in their books to you. My suggestion is that exercise books may be phased out, and students will get their 'education' inside virtual worlds. 'Moodle' is already in place.

Pittsburgh: A new testing ground for acoustic weapons

03-11-2009 13:27 | Repression | Technology | World

The mass mobilisation against September's G20 Summit in Pittsburgh was met with a characteristically brutal response from US Homeland 'Security'. In many ways, police repression of UK protests pales in comparison to American political policing, with activists being routinely arrested under various terrorism-related charges and local and federal law enforcement agencies rolling out military style operations, complete with temporary detention facilities and costing hundreds of thousands of dollars each. The Pittsburgh police, however, may well have distinguished themselves as hitting a new low in the erosion of US civil liberty. Alongside US police staples such as rubber bullets, tear gas and 'flash bang' stun grenades, the Pittsburgh authorities unleashed an acoustic weapon, one of a new generation of 'non-lethal' military devices, used not only to disperse and intimidate protesters, but to gain control over their behaviour.

Critique of Climate Camp action 17/18 October

16-09-2009 11:09 | Energy Crisis | Technology | World

“It’s time to start imagining a future without coal” says the call-out. Oh no! Not that crap again! If anything was going to put thoughtful people off this action, silly rhetoric like that does the trick. It’s like trying to build opposition to Donald Trump’s plans to turn acres of sand dunes near Aberdeen into a golf course for the rich, or golf courses in general, by urging people to imagine a future without grass.

'The Shape of Things to Come' - The EU Stockholm Programme

24-08-2009 10:16 | Repression | Technology | Terror War | World

A recent report released by Statewatch has highlighted the direction in which EU-wide policymaking is likely to heading until the middle of the next decade. The full article here contains a press release from the European Civil Liberties Network which breaks down the 60-page report into something less lengthy. The major themes are massively increased surveillance, tighter social control, and a harsher border regime. It is stated within the report, 'The Shape of Things To Come' by Tony Bunyan, that funding for 'security' in the EU's 2007-2012 financial plan is set to increase by 968%.
