Sunday marked the passage into force of Belgium’s 2007 decision to ban the use of uranium in all conventional weapons and armour after a series of unanimous parliamentary votes and a ban on all government investments in the manufacturers of the weapons. To mark the day, 11 UK NGOs have launched a UK Uranium Weapon Network to increase pressure on the UK government ahead of the 2010 UN General Assembly.

One architecture firm, the Morris design team, already has an idea that’s making waves: turning them into oceanic eco-resorts. Their ‘Rig Hotel’ concept reuses an abandoned oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico, transforming it into a luxury resort offering amenities like boating, snorkeling, and diving as well as acting as a destination for conferences and business meetings.

Waterford occupiers keep factory alive

Noel is part of a group of workers who are keeping the Waterford Crystal flame burning.

He is among a dozen who make sure that 18 tonnes of molten glass continue to be produced by the plant’s furnace every 24 hours.

The furnace must stay working for production at the factory to continue.

If the furnace stops, the glass will solidify and the repairs would cost 8 million euros.
