I'm an individual. I belong to and represent no organisation. I have no authority and don't want it. This is just commentary, suggestion, a discussion starter. I'm an individual who has been to many protests and have often been left questioning their effectiveness. We need effective protest right now and that's what this is about. It is also about taking things further than the TUC will want to take things in March.

Yesterday (Saturday February 12th 2011), the good people of Cambridge City came out in force, fired up and angry about the ongoing gutting of the public sector that is happening under the Tory government (what HAVE the Lib Dems done?), in the form of funding cuts.

Ex-minister suspected behind Alex church bombing ...... Egypt`s general prosecutor on Monday opened probe on former Interior Minister Habib el-Adly`s reported role in the New Year`s Eve bombing of al-Qiddissin Church in Alexandria in which 24 people were killed, an Egyptian lawyer told Al Arabiya. Laywer Ramzi Mamdouh said he had presented a proclamation to Egyptian prosecutor Abd al-Majid Mahmud to investigate news media reports suggesting that the former interior ministry had masterminded the deadly church attack with the intent to blame it on Islamists, escalate government crackdown on them, and gain increased western support for the regime.

Rightly proud of their history, Egyptians like to announce, especially to other Arabs, that Egypt is the world’s mother. The Arabic version is far more tender and poetic 'Misr Um el Dounia'! Light-hearted banter will often ensue between Egyptian and non-Egyptian friends when that statement is brought into the conversation. Today, I think every Arab will concede that, indeed, Misr Um el Dounia!

Vintage fur perpetuates the fur industry, as fur is made 'acceptable' in the vintage scene, it finds it's way on to the catwalk in the form of new fur. Indeed new 'imperfect' fur is often passed off as vintage by manufactures and finds it's way into vintage retailers.

The Egyptian tanks, the delirious protesters sitting atop them, the flags, the 40,000 protesters weeping and crying and cheering in Freedom Square and praying around them, the Muslim Brotherhood official sitting amid the tank passengers. Should this be compared to the liberation of Bucharest? Climbing on to an American-made battle tank myself, I could only remember those wonderful films of the liberation of Paris. A few hundred metres away, Hosni Mubarak's black-uniformed security police were still firing at demonstrators near the interior ministry. It was a wild, historical victory celebration, Mubarak's own tanks freeing his capital from his own dictatorship.

Inspired by the Tunisian example, Egyptians take to the streets in their own protest. But can it last? ... The traditional wisdom has always been that Egyptians don't revolt simply because they are an agricultural society. Farmers require stability and patience to tend their land. Farmers also need a strong central government to protect them against natural disasters, such as floods and droughts. Egypt is no longer an agricultural society.

New Wikileaks: US Knew Tunisian Gov. Rotten Corrupt, Supported Ben Ali Anyway ... The Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten released a series of US diplomatic cables from 2006 on massive and pervasive corruption and nepotism in Tunisia and its effect on economic development and social problems. The cables show that the United States government was fully aware of the dangerous and debilitating level of corruption in Tunisia, and its anti-democratic implications. But they raise the question of whether Washington was wise to make Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali, despite his clear foibles, the pillar of its North Africa policy because of his role, as a secular strongman, in repressing Muslim movements (as William MacLean of Reuters argues).

A rather strange thing is happening on Midsummer Common in Cambridge.
Trees are being felled, despite minimal public consultation and local residents' very visible opposition, and yet we are supposed to believe this is Cambridge City Council acting democractically.

Today (Monday 17/01/2011) about 300 people gathered together on Kings Parade in Cambridge, front of the university Senate House for a silent vigil with Cambridge Academics as a protest against the government's higher education policies.
Many of them were university academics, who symbolically turned up in their black robes to represent the wider body of higher education tutors, whom are affected by the government's cuts to higher education funding.

For over a century, Zionism has subjected Palestine and Palestinians to a structural and violent form of destruction, dispossession, land appropriation, and erasure in the pursuit of a new colonial Israeli society. Too often, this Palestine ‘Question’ has been framed as unique; a national, religious, and/or liberation struggle with little semblance to colonial conflicts elsewhere.

The Fatah-controlled Palestinian liberation organization (PLO) attempted to disavow earlier remarks in which it welcomed the overthrow of the Tunisian president after it issued a statement in this regard.
