Video of Blockaded: Birmingham Council House cuts meeting

28-02-2013 22:23

The richest are taking huge tax breaks while we are hit by £101million of cuts to public services, facing the bedroom tax, our schools are being turned into academies, waste collection is drying up, and youth and social services are being closed.

On Tuesday Birmingham Councillors met to vote through the cuts for this year, without any mandate. They went against Birmingham's millions to serve Birmingham's millionaires, but the people of Birmingham weren't going to let them get away with it...

Photos from Birmingham Council House blockade

26-02-2013 15:16

Activists from across Birmingham have been blockading all entrances to the Council House since 11am, trying to physically prevent Councillors from entering for the budget meeting, where the cuts will be undemocratically voted through. Not surprisingly, most Councillors were not willing to engage with them in debate. The police have helped push the cuts through by forcibly attempting to break up the blockade and escorting the Councillors to the art museum entrance, which is linked to the Council House. Activists attempted to blockade these alternative entrances, but the police kept finding new ways to get Councillors inside. One activist managed to find a way inside the Council House during the meeting, and heckled Albert Bore before being carried out by security.

GLASGOW DEFENCE CAMPAIGN – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TWO ARRESTS ON PEACEFUL GLASGOW AGAINST ATOS PROTEST

22 Feb, Glasgow – Two supporters of Fight Racism! Fight Imperialism! (Glasgow) were today violently arrested, Friday 22 February, shortly after 2pm outside the Royal Bank of Scotland on Gordon Street, Glasgow city centre. They were taking part in a peaceful rolling picket organised by Glasgow Against ATOS, a campaign committed to opposing the French multinational ATOS and the government’s attack on welfare.

Both those arrested were taken to Stewart Street police station and were released at approximately 18:30. They are facing charges of liberating a prisoner from custody, resisting arrest and using a megaphone. Court date is set for Friday 22 March, for which solidarity protests are being organised. In an outrageous attack on democratic rights, their bail conditions include a ban on attending demonstrations in Glasgow city centre. This is the real reason behind these arrests: to disrupt and destroy political activity.

The Great Tax-Cut Experiment and Corporate Taxes as % of Profits

22-02-2013 19:29

Comparisons with Other Countries: Americans pay a smaller proportion of total income in taxes than do people in any other advanced capitalist economy. As recently as the late 1960s, taxes accounted for as high a share of national income in the United States as in Western European countries. After decades of tax cuts, however, the United States now stands out for its low taxes and small government

Why BBC journalists are on strike today

18-02-2013 13:58

Audio
BBC NUJ members have a proud record of defending their colleagues against compulsory redundancies. They have held to their policy through thick and thin and against all the odds. Their struggle is an example to this government that it cannot expect working people to accept cuts which effect working people lives, careers and the quality of the services they provide without making their voice and actions felt. The strike today must make the BBC think their through their decisions again - stop recruiting while others are being shown the door. Today makes me proud to be a NUJ member all over again. Unity is our strength.

AMAZON employ Nazis as paramilitary enforcers

15-02-2013 00:18

Not content with pursuing the kind of tax scams that are causing the whole-scale destruction of public services here in the UK, corporate tax cheats AMAZON have been filmed employing Nazi thugs to intimidate its foreign temp workers in Germany.

An ARD channel TV documentary showed AMAZON employing paramilitary guards from a security company named after Nazi leader Rudolph HESS, some wearing clothing from a company called Thor Steinar, whose products are (ironically) banned from sale on Amazon because of Thor Steinar's well-known Nazi connections & use of Nazi imagery!
