Reclaiming Valentines Day

london imcista | 04.02.2004 12:00 | London

In London, the Greek goddess Venus joined protests against the commercialisation of valentines day. She invited everybody for a group hug by the statue of Eros on Trafalgar Square. Eros was adorned with red heart balloons, people made their own valentine cards, the rhythms of resistance samba band entertained the crowds [video]. One of the guests says: "Some cops refused to take part in the hug and tried to spoil things a little, but even they were beaten back by the power of love."

San Francisco celebrated under the Slogan "Reclaim the Streets and Desires" with a big Street Party. The party was in full swing with a full-on sound system, a pirate marching band, street theater, couches, mattresses, paint splattered on GAP, and an impromptu soccer game in the middle of the street.
