Eviction Delayed at Occupied Social Centre (Fortess Road)

Resista | 24.02.2004 13:10 | Free Spaces | Repression | Social Struggles | London

Tuesday 24th February: This morning the planned eviction of the occupied social centre at 93 Fortess Road in Kentish Town, London, was stalled by the presence of around seventy supporters.

With people occupying the rooftop, new defences having been constructed overnight (both inside and outside), supporters out on the streets and people inside ready to lock-on, it seems the eviction has been stalled.

At around 8am this morning, police and bailiffs numbering around eight, arrived and held a meeting in a nearby street for around half an hour, and disappeared again. All morning the people outside got support from passing cars and passengers on the buses. Loads of flyers were given out as well explaining the situation. A reporter from the local paper also came to cover the events.

The main demand from the people occupying the social centre is to be allowed to stay until 31st of March, finishing the advertised programme of events at the centre (see below), at which point they have said they will leave peacefully. They also say they want time to hold public meetings with the locals who have been using the building to find another venue to continue the project.

While it looks then like an eviction will not now take place today, nothing is certain. Many people think that any eviction would now require specialist bailiffs to remove people from the roof, cut others out of lock-ons and deal with the extensive barricade defences inside. However there is no sense of complacency at the social centre and supporters say they are determined to stay en masse to maintain the space.

Anyone wanting to get involved or offer support or help resist any eviction, just get in touch or pop down there for a visit:
